It wasn't even a joke, he was imitating the southern accent. Obviously the lady who complained had never heard of this.

There is one part of the Telegraph link I do not understand , it mentions the demand for 'safe spaces' on campus. What might they be? Am I correct in assuming they are places where only gay transgender and non whites are allowed? If that is the case , and I hope it is not, it shows discrimination is getting worse not better.
This is a mad story. Mobley's response was:

People need to focus on actual racism (eg. the Destinee Mangum case), rather than silly jokes like this.

I am not sure ( actually I am) the afrocaribbeans dont eat 'grits' and call them as such - references in the article to deep south and Gone with the Wind

Gone with the wind - only Mamie is black there isnt she? Southern accent and black accent are distinguished in the article as tho they are different and not synonyms ]

if a member of the public heard a policeman says in public to another policeman who is a great friend "o yeah I had to arrest another of your nag-nag drug runner friends in sarf london"
and the public complained
then running a defence of gay banter in the ensuing enquiry would I suggest not really work
