I think it's more than that, ymb. Short-term errors and unexpected events (ash clouds and so on) do happen. But this seems to be a longer-term problem: they're not paying enough (some even appear to be Uber pilots, self- employed) so off the pilots go and join Norwegian, who are also a low-cost airline but somehow manage to put them all under contract. So...

It isn't a mistake Ummm.....it has been caused by chaotic planning of their own staff holidays schedules, something that they should have seen coming.
400,000 people are going to be effected by this and its reasonable to expect that the Airline should tell people well in advance, so that they can make other arrangements, if other arrangements are possible of course.

Their website says, "Up to 50 flights per day (less than 2% of flights) have been cancelled for the next six weeks.
Your flight is operating as usual unless you receive an email."
It then gives links to cancelled flights from last Saturday to this Wednesday. I've just counted the flights cancelled on each day and it's
16th 80
17th 82
18th 56
19th 55
20th 53
If they think 82 falls in the range of 40-50, is it any wonder there's chaos?

They've also said they've changed the leave year from April-March to January-December. That meant they had to ask folk to take leave in September and October.
If the cancellations affect only about 2% of flights I assume the same percentage applies to the pilots. If true, could the 2% of pilots not be allowed to carry forward the extra days to 2018 and spread them over the whole year?

I have never flown Ryanair.....never met O'Leary, but Mrs sqad who has high standards of travel ease and efficiency HAD to travel Ryanair.
She was impressed......and that is not easy.
Ryanair has expanded worldwide in the last 5 years whilst other airlines have struggled.
They must be doing something right mikey.

The 'shambles' as you put it is not being defended, Mikey, the airline as it operates normally is.
You say you've never flown with Ryanair so base your opinions on newspaper headlines and second-hand information.
In ordinary times Ryanair is a perfectly adequate carrier offering low prices for many destinations, just like Easy Jet and others.
They've messed this up as they've done in the past, mostly due to poor communication, but they continue to transport thousands to their destinations for little money or fuss.
