I don't think they have got away with anything - it is currently being investigated and it looks like it may have been sublet!

Sub letting goes on all the time and it is sickening on all levels.

Subletting is a big problem as we saw with Grenfell, but a landlord should be checking up on what's going on in the property

I don't think they knew anything about it. It is under investigation.

I haven't seen my landlord once in nearly, two years. He wouldn't know how many people I had living here. As long as the rent is paid, he is happy.

I find it hard to believe they didn't have an idea. Next door to me is rented out and I'd contact the landlord if that many people were coming and going.

You may be right, but I've lived in my home for forty years and have had a landlord's agent inside the property twice.

I doubt they knew. They would have been getting the same rent, but more damage to the house. It wouldn't be worthwhile to them.

We have our properties checked at least every 3 months. This covers us for any issues and ensures we maintain high standard properties and also stops sub letting.

We shall have to seE what is going on here.

I had to pester/bully the landlord's nephew who is supposed to look after the two flats where I live, to fix the horrendous leaks in the roof. It had been affecting the lady who lives on the first floor, and she had been complaining for over a year before I moved in.

He never comes here and wouldn't have a clue what was going on.

I don't know the real truth of this case, it will come out eventually.

What I do know is I've just done a rough calculation of how much I could have earned subletting over time and I'm gutted ;-)

But they are responsible for how many people live there Pixie, plus safety, heating is adequate, electrics, water, damp issues etc.

It's doubtful anyone among this lot are earning much from this Mamy. They almost certainly split the £2,500 a month rent between them. Eighteen quid a week to live in Brent is quite a bargain. Yes, the conditions aren't ideal but they are obviously better than those prevailing where they came from. With such inconsiderable outgoings it allows the chaps to slightly undercut the going rate which is needed by workers with more conventional living arrangements.

The Mayor of London has stuck in his two pennyworth:

“It is outrageous and shameful that we continue to see extreme examples like this, in which renters are being exploited and treated so abysmally. In 21st century London this is entirely unacceptable and must stop now,” said Khan.”

Nobody “exploited” the renters. The house was let to three Romanians. They obviously shipped in 32 of their mates soon after their tenancy agreement was signed. Nobody was exploited it was their choice. Also among their choices was making their way from Romania to the UK and in particular to Inner London where they either knew or soon learnt of the property difficulties. They could, of course, have chosen to return to Romania. They found the fare to get here, I’m sure they could rustle it up to get back. It obviously suited them to live in such squalor.

The way Mr Khan can hasten an end to what he terms “exploitation” is to encourage his party to help the government secure a swift and absolute exit from the EU. Then people like the 35 blokes involved in this disgraceful affair (which is probably just one example of many hundreds, if not thousands) will not be able to pitch up uninvited and instead will have to secure leave to remain. Normal countries do not allow unfettered immigration on this scale involving vast numbers of people with nowhere to live. The sooner the UK returns to being a normal country, the better.

Of course they wouldn't know anything about it - and the council should pay them a million pounds each in damages immediately, for being classed as "rogue landlords" and if the sub-letter turns out not to be a proper rogue, they should give him a million pounds also!
