I have only been there maybe 4-5 times but I thought it was unremittingly awful. (Apart from Mars Bars)..... Didn't John Betjeman get it right ?

Never ...

Get out your mat and pray to the west
there are lots of places that seem "unremittingly awful" to me.
newport for example.
Slough's trading eastate was (and may still be for all i know) the largest trading estate in single ownership in europe i think. there are plenty of jobs, near to london but with no london prices (to live) and her maj on your doorstep :)

Bednobs....agree about Newport (Gwent), but Newport, (Pembs) is rather nice !

I live about 30 mins from the Gower, and another 30 mins from the Beacons, so I am quite happy here. Reasonable housing costs, plenty of Lidls, and good-ish road links.
Not the nicest of places. A mate of mine lives there and prides himself on driving his Bentley to the local Spoons.
West Windsor wouldn't be my first choice to live and work. However due to the diverse community it does have some very good and interesting restaurants and shops.
I like Newport (Gwent) despite the unpromising vista from the M4.
A town trying hard to recover from the twin blows of the demise of steel and coal and largely succeeding I’d say.
Slough gets all the bad press, but I must say I have always found Maidenhead hard to beat. At least Slough almost makes an effort not to be liked, whereas it’s more upmarket neighbour is complacent, dull and ultimately soul destroying.
Ever seen a blind man cross the road
Trying to make the other side.......
Ever seen a young girl growing old
Trying to make herself a bride.......
.....
So what becomes of you my love
When they have finally stripped you of
The handbags and the gladrags
That your poor old Granddad had to sweat to buy you
.....
You on the waccy baccy TTT?
// Swindon and Stoke-on Trent were fourth and fifth in the study respectively.//

Slough, Swindon, and Stoke all in the top 5.

I wonder if they've printed the list upside down by mistake?
get with the program, The office theme tune, Slough's most famous export....
Once I was a young man
All I thought I had to do was smile
While you are still a young girl
And you bought everything in style
.....
Swindon is in a league of its own for sheer dreariness.
They attempted to liven it up with a bizarre roundabout, which I am sure was a desperate attempt to get people so befuddled they'd never leave, despite their urgent desire to do so
Good grief! I can think of better places.

Possibly. Apart from this:

Should this post not have been in Jokes?

Made me laugh, I know it well.
I'm partisan, of course, but I wouldn't live anywhere else than in Yorkshire. Preferably not back in Bradford, but otherwise fine - and wonderful in N & E Ridings. Nowhere, anywhere near London, need apply.

Fair point NJ: I did think of the railways as I was posting.
