woofy......I agree about chicken pox and German measles for good reasons, but i had never heard of "measles parties" I would have thought that would be "pushing your luck."

I have just read in a Gloucester newspaper that there are several cases of measles at Wynstones School and one at Marling School in Stroud.

Woofy...I agree, the whole MMR thing wasn't handled very well. But when nearly 100% of GPs were telling their patients that their kids should have the jab, it was daft and dangerous to ignore that advice.

The Doctors were right, and Wakefield was wrong.

I agree Sqad but it happened...odd that it wasn't done for mumps which can be nasty for older boys....

mikey, it was the public government attitude that caused the problem I think....and there were quite a few GP's who were prepared to get in and administer the single vaccine schedule while it remained available.

Agree with Woof here. As "kids" if someone in the street came down with chickenpox, measles or even mumps, mothers were keen to have their own children sleep with them for the night. Most of those illnesses were much worse in teens or young adults and it was thought best to "get" it when young.

gentian violet was used for tinea ( ringworm)
we werent allowed to play with kids with violet spots

measles was so serious that the GPs would have a case conference and agree on the diagnosis - I remember ;The Brain of Bridgewater; saying 'yup deffo measles' - yeah just like Drs Finlay Cameron and Dr Snawdy would confer together

My sister went blue ( wiv measles pneumonia yeah) and didnt go to hospital - as my mother said - why bother? what were they going to do ? They didnt even have oxygen.
so we just hired a woman from the village to watch the child at night and rouse us if she died

oh ! those were the days ! (I dont know wny sqad thinks Wakeford isnt blameworthy - there were double the cases and six deaths as a result of his research - and should have been three deaths so you can conclude Wakeford was responsible for three childrens deaths. Not a Shipman I agree)

I remember my sister having measles as a child. She was really ill and delirious. Never heard of measles parties, but they still have chicken pox parties now.

Being kept in the semi-dark was horrendous to a child who loved reading
