About eight years ago the catch on the back door of my Honda broke and the door can now only be opened from the inside.

This hasn't been a problem for me and it's always passed the MOT until today.....the mechanic says it's a failure as the door has to open from the outside...

Seven other mechanics have passed it because it's not a safety issue unless a back door doesn't close properly......
I've had a google around but I can't find an exact answer....can anyone here help....

Thanks Gx

Halfords don't seem to care, they just check for corrosion and sharp edges

Simples, the mechanic will work from a checklist, just ask him to show you the section on doors opening from the outside. I do think you should get it fixed for safety reasons. Getting people out if they are unconscious for example.
Good one jno, facts speak volumes.

Oh well..... thank you all for your answers....when I looked I was getting conflicting advice.....the part is on its way from Belgium now......That's my Premium Bond win spent....
I guess the other testers didn't try the door....

Never bothered me as I can open it from the inside if I want to let folk in or drag unconscious folk out......they're a nuisance.... ;-)

Poor Gabriel....that's the first time he's failed on anything and I think he's about fourteen now......he'll be a bit miffed......

thanks for your help all.....Gx
The rules and regulations changed recently and they added a lot more items to be checked. The basic premise is now, if it's fitted it has to work properly, with the exception of the radio.
On reading around a bit, it looks like the test changed in 2012 to make the 'open from outside' a specific test on the rear doors.

Which does beg the question about the accuracy of the last 4 years of testing ...

Thank you both.....I did also ponder the difference between my car and a two door but I guess that's the seating arrangement for getting out......x
I can recommend (give details of) an MOT station that would pass a bicycle for an MOT.

I've never used them BTW.
cor, they like changing rules of loads of things don't they??

one winter night, wanted to get home from work, the locks were frozen apart from the boot, (car was one of these multi-lock door thingies or whatever they're called)
Only lock that was unfrozen was the boot, so at least that gave the young guys an interesting view from their bus at 11.20pm)
Guess, you can't test something that isn't there. Hence older cars get away without having seat belts.

Hmmmm.....so if I still had my welding gear I could weld it shut so it wasn't a door...... ;-)

It seems that if I leave it at the MOT test centre till it's fixed I don't have to pay for a retest......if I bring it home and go back I do.....???

Not that it's at the MOT centre.....I have a chap with a little garage who looks after Gabriel for me.....he services it then takes it for its MOT....so it's not at the MOT centre now anyway.....
He's twittered on about the door for years but as it's always passed I've not fussed.....

Life on my bike is much less confusing.....though draughtier..... :-)

Yes, and how many people do you see with hanging air fresheners inside the front windscreen of their car? If they are not taken out when a car has its MOT. then they will make you fail your MOT too as they block your vision.
Weld e'm shut Dukes of Hazard style.
weld them shut? Then what will you do if you need to get rid of a backseat driver in a hurry?

All of them, Tony.....then in and out through the sun roof?........That sounds perfect..... :-)
