It may be illegal in Italy to 'abondon an animal to grave suffering' but that does not mean the employer should have to pay up because of an employee's sick dog.

Unpaid leave or taken as annual leave should be sufficient.
Every illegal immigrant must herewith adopt a dog or cat. That'll keep them safe from deportation.
