I ask this because what crime as Reggie committed, it was an off the cuff remark, which shouldn't have offended anyone.
There can be Fat Jews the same as Fat Christians or Fat Muslims, it seems these days one cannot make certain descriptive remarks about anyone, they have not done any physical harm, nor has the Jewish community made any complaints, at least not to my knowledge.

Nevertheless he apologised honestly, and has only "resigned" from doing TOTP (which surely to Isaac and Abraham they should consign to history now, rather than bringing it back every Christmas for one show only) rather than sent into exile.

You got there before me.
God knows how the AB Editor is going to deal with all the skid marks left on this website, what with the handbrake turns that some are making.
Back to AOG’s question - it’s impossible to know for sure, but knowing his telly works, I suspect a decision was made by the show’s producers, and then fed back to Yates’ management team.
The term in itself technically is purely descriptive, as in, “Tall newscaster”, or “Funny bus driver”.
However, it’s the context of the description which makes it dodgy.
We should understand context, and in the context of what Yates was saying, there is an undercurrent of anti-semitism.
It’s code.

I would suggest that if the BBC had sacked Mr Yates, they would have said so, and not permitted him the luxury of saving face by saying he had resigned if this was not the case.
In terms of the remark he made, it was careless, and does infer a cultural stereotype - as advised in the link, the inference is that an old-style Jewish manager is profiteering from his charges.
On that basis, reference to a 'fat Jew' has different connotations than reference to a far member of another faith.
AOG is of course entitled to think that this is a fuss about nothing, as his OP suggests, but others obviously don't see it the same way - including Mr Yates himself.
