A 19-year-old political activist, who is hoping to become the first transgender MP, was elected to the position in Rochester and Strood last month.

“No woman has the experience to be representative of all women,” says Lily Madigan, but Lily Madigan doesn’t have the experience to be representative of any woman.

Right on, Labour!!

Is anyone surprised that the appointment has sparked a bitter row among some in the Labour party and the press?

personally I really don't care what gender or sexual preference my MP declares. I want them to do a decent job of being an MP and working for me....unlike the sitting idiot where I live.
Hang on, I thoughts Diane Abbott was the first..........never mind. :-)
If one had to be the same gender in order to represent another, every constituency would need to vote in two MPs. I'm unsure what the fuss is. Someone opting to mimic a woman is a separate issue, unless one feels such a desire casts doubt on his ability in other areas of judgement.
Of some local party who have decided to elect her, yes.

Why the Times, Mail et al have suddenly decided to start foaming at the mouth at this is rather beyond me.
not sure i understand that statement above..
Transgender? Looks more like 'she' needs a face transplant , if that photo is real. Why would anyone wear lipstick that is such a terrible colour match for her face? In fact the entire head looks like a poor quality plastic model.
So they have a bloke as woman's officer! PMSL, takes all sorts!
'Trans women are women'

Transport, identifying as left wing.
Are transformer people who were once women?
Transmission, where men identify as nuns.
Transitory, a digital Conservative?

Be as well looking for a parliamentary gig, never going to get a job on the makeup counter in Boots.

^ Well said Bigbad ,my thoughts exactly.
perhaps its not what he looks like is whether a teen can become an MP and if so do some good.
I think that an MP should have a bit more experience of life than an eighteen year old would have,
^ I agree, my own view is that no one should be allowed to stand as a candidate unless they have held down a real job for at least 5 years.
That would ensure we had MP's who actually had experience of real life.
There are plenty of ugly women. I don't think it's especially fair (or dignified, or rational, frankly) to attack Madigan over whether or not she looks good.

The question is - are the people she is supposed to be representing in this one minor locality satisfied that she can do it? Evidently yes. What's the problem?

//I agree, my own view is that no one should be allowed to stand as a candidate unless they have held down a real job for at least 5 years. //

Seems a bit redundant in a constituency-based system. If pre-parliamentary life is a big decider for you (and doubtless others), why not just be content that you can vote based on that if you wish and let everyone else vote on other criteria if they want to?
Diversity Comrade.
Like it or it's the gulag for you.
Yes, the Soviet Union was of course notable for its enthusiastic support for transgender rights. -_-
Only time will tell whether her youth and lack of experience have any bearing on how she does the job she's been elected to do.

I'll refrain from commenting on the choice of lipstick shade and beauteousness of other responders until I've seen evidence.
Doug.

Funny doug. :-)
Any comment by me would be swiftly removed so I shall refrain.
