Better late than never, never forgotten.

I can remember my Mum and her relatives talking about this, when I was a boy in the 50's.

I can also recall some kind of sign at the Tube Station, although I can't find any mention of it now.

they have only just opened the memorial to the 173 who died in this disaster.
Emmie....I do have a memory of something though ...perhaps just a plaque on the wall.
Question Author
could be, this is somewhat larger and more prominent.

Just saw this on the news.

I'd never heard of this before, and neither had my husband. Apparently at the time, survivors and the media were asked not to publicise it, because it would've affected morale.
...but yes, I agree - it's taken way too long. I would've thought that something like (a memorial) should've been erected in the 60s at least (understandably, rebuilding efforts would've concentrated on housing in the 40s and 50s).

You are absolutely right, Mikey. There has been a plaque at the top of one of the staircases at the tube station for as long as I can remember. I've seen it countless times:

Thought so NJ....I haven't seen that plague for over 50 years, but it was instantly recognizable. !

Lots of things happened during WW2, that never made the light of day at the time....it was all about moral.

Google "The Lancastria"

Or Slapton Sands.

Or "Hallsville Junior School"
