"The grandparents said their grandchildren were home-schooled, but it is not entirely clear what that means"
It seems that in California, anybody call their private home a "school" I repeat what I posted earlier, and again, its from the news report :::
"In California, private schools operate outside the jurisdiction of the education department and most regulations. They are directly accountable to students and their parents or guardians, and the state has no authority to monitor or evaluate them.
Teachers at private schools in California also do not need to hold a valid state teaching qualification"

Weird is the first thing that comes to mind. Then -how were so many children and adults kept quiet and subdued. Were they drugged or threatened? They obviously didn't want to get away from their parents or they would have done so. The parents could not have prevented a mass exodus. Some of the children were adults. They would not be shackled 24 hours a day. What finally made the young girl of 17 decide to escape and go to the police. So many questions to be answered. I just hope that all the children were born to the mother and not to some of the older girls.
Andres....brain-washed would be my answer to your first question.
In a country where so many people profess to believe in patent nonsense, it can't be difficult to persuade people, especially when so many of them are so young.
Also, being chained and shackled to your bed would seem to be pretty good place to start if you wanted to keep someone a prisoner.
