The youngest child is said to be 2 yrs old so the wife must have had her when she was 47.

Ellie...also from the link :::

"James and Betty Turpin told ABC they were considered a good Christian family in their community and that "God called on them" to have so many children"
Shocking story, wicked people are very devious.

Agree 100% Mamy, but if the laws are as such in California, then I can't see how this kind of thing can be prevented from happening again.
I'm really not up to playing a 'but' game - whether it be about God, Surnames or Home Schooling.

Wicked people will find a way.
Isn't the law the same here? Anyone can home-school, you don't have to register that anywhere. As mamya says, people like this will find a way...
The chn looked so well dressed in those Facebook pics. I wonder what their own upbringing was like.

Given the Post @ 10:55, are you now saying they were at a Private School or were Home-schooled, there's a big difference.
No, sorry, nothing shocks me.
"Homo sum nihil a me alienum puto" ( I am a man therefore nothing human is alien to me)

I have been around too long to be shocked by human atrocities.

Mamy....you are right but I can't recall an event as bad as this occurring in the UK, as our laws are so different to what they they have in some American States.

But, as you say, wickedness will always find a way.
It's just so incredible that they both were so cruel.
I too can do without the "...America (where else)" comments. Really not necessary.
Question Author
Baldric....I only know what the news report has said.

"The grandparents said their grandchildren were home-schooled, but it is not entirely clear what that means"

It seems that in California, anybody call their private home a "school" I repeat what I posted earlier, and again, its from the news report :::

"In California, private schools operate outside the jurisdiction of the education department and most regulations. They are directly accountable to students and their parents or guardians, and the state has no authority to monitor or evaluate them.

Teachers at private schools in California also do not need to hold a valid state teaching qualification"

Weird is the first thing that comes to mind. Then -how were so many children and adults kept quiet and subdued. Were they drugged or threatened? They obviously didn't want to get away from their parents or they would have done so. The parents could not have prevented a mass exodus. Some of the children were adults. They would not be shackled 24 hours a day. What finally made the young girl of 17 decide to escape and go to the police. So many questions to be answered. I just hope that all the children were born to the mother and not to some of the older girls.
Question Author
Andres....brain-washed would be my answer to your first question.

In a country where so many people profess to believe in patent nonsense, it can't be difficult to persuade people, especially when so many of them are so young.

Also, being chained and shackled to your bed would seem to be pretty good place to start if you wanted to keep someone a prisoner.
//The officers were "shocked" to discover that seven of them were actually adults aged between 18 and 29.//
I find it unbelievable that they could do nothing.
As Mickey says Danny; Braniwashed.
Mikey....not going to a traditional school does not mean children here go off the radar.....checks are made....

And as for what they do when it comes to GCSEs etc? They take those at a local school....can gain a whole raft of As and A*s and end up with two excellent degrees.......believe me..... ;-)
Just glad that the girl escaped. The whole sordid story will hopefully come to light.
Wonder how long it will be before this is made into a film ?!
