The UK does not have any trade deals with anybody. It is not allowed to have them nor is it allowed to negotiate them. The only ones we have are those negotiated by the EU that we have by proxy.

The customs union is a good idea. But unfortunately the model pursued by the EU does not suit the UK. It has to accommodate he requirements of 28 very disparate nations and quite simply it does not work properly for most of the member nations. It’s fine for facilitating trade within the EU (although some of its conditions are too onerous) but it is of very little use for doing so elsewhere. Bearing in mind that the EU is forecast to grow at a far less healthy rate than the rest of the world, we should broaden or horizons.

If we do withdraw, we will be in a strange position. Some say the best thing to try and do would be to keep a parallel course with all our current arrangements. The difficulty with this is that other countries have the right to object. Some idea of the complexities of that here:

This tack won’t have gone down well with the EU (hurrah I hear the short term thinkers cry) as our leaving will affect existing deals eg import quotas for Japanese cars / New Zealand Lamb. This means we and the EU would have to renegotiate with the EU and The exporting countries, which could be complex, further weakening our position on the world stage.

May has to go. I think she’s been pressured into making a decision, any decision, to quieten her own party’s ‘rebels’ and I don’t think it’s a sound or sensible one.

Unless the EU changes the foolish rule about stopping countries making their own deals outside the EU, and concentrates instead on where they should, i.e. dealing between member EU countries, then one can't reasonably consider remaining in it. It's the EU dictating where it ought not that's causing the need to get out. Any work that needs to be done to facilitate this should be in progress already. No matter how simple or complex it is. After all the 2 years discussion period is slipping by, and we sure don't need any further deferral period.
