The complaints about the NHS are given plenty of oxygen and breed at the speed of bacteria, while the successful 99.999 treatments go unremarked...except by normal folks. Everyone I know has nothing but praise for the NHS and rightly so.
Due to it's enormous size it's an easy target for those who would bring attention to themselves, ie politicians.
The size is mind boggling: take all three armed services, the MOD that runs them, all the Police and prison services, the four other main cultural icons, Tesco,Sainsbury,Asda,Waitrose....and you're still half a million employees behind the NHS. We use just the hospital A&E departments 90 million times a year!
Because of its size and spread it accepted by those who know as being easily the best when something serious needs attention quickly - other countries have nothing like the density of expertise.
