There is a Documentary about this on Channel 4 On 18th February at 9.00. It was discussed on BBC Breakfast yesterday quite fascinating .

I think Pangaea broke up a bit more than 10,000 years ago, spath.
Spath - Neanderthals are an entirely different thing.

Garaman - I put up a thread about this yesterday albeit about the science of the discovery. Unfortunately, it got a bit swamped by the usual hobby-horsists....

Sorry, Jack, I missed it.
No, don't apologise..... :o)

Same subject but a different angle.

I think it's all pretty fascinating stuff and can't wait to see the documentary Margo mentions.

Indeed we did, Spath. And they were dark skinned.
Britain is full of people whose earliest ancestors originated in Africa.....I am unsure why this info from Cheddar Man should be so surprising ?

But its not really surprising that some of the Usual Suspects took high dudgeon at this news. If Cheddar Man had been found to be a only a little bit brown or black, you wouldn't have heard a peep out of them !
What a shame that AB's resident racist hunter missed the thread :0(
Mikey - the article actually say dark to black skin - not black skin, there isa difference.
That is correct Margo. But he wasn't blonde.

I still can't see what the controversy is about this discovery.
Mikey, //But its not really surprising that some of the Usual Suspects took high dudgeon at this news. //

I didn't see anyone taking 'high dudgeon'. Unless I missed something, because I'm never sure who you mean when you point the 'usual suspect' finger, I saw a few people having a chuckle but that's all.
Mikey, what controversy?
They conclude the origins of all Britons from a sample of one?

"Cheddar Man" (looks far more like Cheddar Woman in the picture) could have been a cross bred individual fathered by a lone traveller for all we know.
Beso,. I agree. Interesting find nonetheless.
Colour of skin depends on climate as it is really the bodies way of protecting itself. As it seems pretty certain these days that we originated from "Africa/Middle East" it is hardly surprising that "Cheddar Person" would be somewhat swarthy.

Each little find brings us closer to finding our origins and it is fascinating, however one does have to be careful as in many cases artistic licence is used to fill the gaps only to be changed when real proof is found later.
