Why is the shooter still alive? The punishment for such an atrocity should be a very slow and painful death.

I am waiting for the NRA to appear on our screens, to tell us, yet again, that its people that kill people, not guns.

You will recognise that NRA spokesman, as he will have huge wads of cash sticking out of every pocket, all willingly and enthusiastically donated by the interested parties, not least the Republican Party.

But here is one American politician, that appears to have some common sense, US Senator Chris Murphy, the Connecticut Democrat who represents the area where the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting took place in 2012 ::

^ Yes I agree, but there is NO chance of change in US gun laws. Trump again says the answer is 'More Guns'. He wants all school teachers to carry guns while at school and armed school marshals guarding every school.

The problem is not the guns, it is the mentality of the people using them. Until people like you get off your hobby horse and stop blaming guns and look for the underlying reason this will never stop.

YMB...we probably have some unhinged people here in Britain as well. Both Hamilton and Ryan were mad.

But the big difference is that over here, guns are difficult to obtain. In America, they are available extremely easily, in their millions.

YMF If it was as difficult to get a gun in the USA as it is here , there would the same level of shootings there are here in the USA.
People do not realise just how easy it is to get a gun in the USA. The supermarket Walmart has many outlets that are licensed to sell guns. You can literally just pick up a gun and a box of ammunition along with your food shopping and pay at the till. The only delay is if you can't show that you already hold a 'permit to carry' . If you do not have a permit the shop just asks you to wait a few minutes while they check the FBI database to see if you have and criminal convictions. Once cleared you just pay and walk out with the gun and ammo.

I think you have missed my point.

I do think it would be a good idea for gun law to be addressed in the USA (if the US want it of course).

BUT. For situations like this think of the practicalities. Firstly there are an estimated 400m guns in the US so they are simply not going to be removed overnight or indeed any time in the near future.
Secondly the US, having the terrain it does, mean you cannot ban guns totally. There re a fair few people who do not have the luxury of the Police to come to the rescue - you just cant abandon them (although yes the dont need and AK47).
Thirdly, and most pertinent to this latest News, when yu have a deranged person like this hell bent on some sort of revenge do you not think they will resort to other methods like a bomb or a truck? Bombs are relatively easy to make with easily available substances and trucks well ....

As I said above, to solve this problem we need to stop the knee jerk reaction of blame the gun. They need to address and understand the problem of American kids wanting to kill other kids.

In some States, maybe all of them, schools are designated 'gun free areas'. I don't think that helps for various reasons.

To be honest, there's not much point rehashing all these arguments after every mass shooting.

Another very sad day for the USA.

One practical suggestion that has been made is having two or three armed ex-veterans in every high school who would gladly volunteer to protect and defend the young people there. It would be a practical response to a horrific reality.

According to reliable estimates the USA has way more guns per head of the population than any other country on earth.
I would suggest that that is a major factor.
