The bill //acknowledges that while parents have the right to give religious guidance to their children, “such a right can never exceed the rights of the child”.//

Both Jewish and Islamic organisations have condemned the proposal, but good for Iceland. Let’s hope the rest of the so-called civilised world has the courage to follow suit.

Jim at 09:06, The Jews can't - the Muslims won't.
It was a pun, Naomi.

I know. Nevertheless to avoid confusion it required a response.
Good for Iceland for dipping a toe in the water and possibly giving a lead to all right-thinking people.

As far as that goes though, with circumcision there's no end in sight.
Good. The baby's rights are more important. I hope a similar law is introduced here.
Good. Well done Iceland.

It’s ages since I shopped at Iceland, but thanks for the warning.

No. of Iceland stores in the UK over 800
No. of circumcisions in Iceland in the last 12 years: 21
With those stats someone might care to work out the probability of being circumcised in an Iceland store versus it happening in Iceland the country.
With the percentage of circumcised male babies in the US vastly greater than the percentage of gun-toting families, perhaps it is time for Donald Trump to follow Iceland's brave lead: or will he favour arming the babies with clippers in self-defence. ...

So well done Iceland, but it's a bit like me giving up jelly for Lent
A nice little "earner" for any Icelandic surgeon who would provide a diagnosis and perform the procedure.

I can't see the point id making the procedure illegal.
Good for Iceland and hopefully other Nordic countries will follow suit.
That picture in the OP's link is, for me, chilling.

It'd meant to be, you wouldn't expect an anti circumcision article to show a gurgling, smiling baby.......now would you?
Cases of cervical cancer and venereal diseases are much lower in Jewish women.
just sayin'
No good just banning it if it is still allowed to carry on.

FGM has been banned in Britain for years, but it is still being carried out without a single arrest and conviction being made.
It's horrific. I remember an episode of Seinfeld in which Jerry was to perform the op on a new baby in someone's house. How can you make comedy out of something so grim? And it doesn't even come close to the horrors of female 'circumcision'.
Gromit and Johnny 5......their cocktail sausages used to be really good, expect they won't be selling them anymore:(

There could be other reasons for that, Khandro.
Question Author
Khandro, that’s as may be, but this surgical procedures is carried out without anaesthetic and mostly by unqualified people. There is no defence for that.
Question Author
sqad, see above.
AOG,

The have been arrests for FGM and even a prosecution. But the trial collapsed last week. (See separate thread)
The sooner all religiously inspired violence and stupidity is consigned to the dustbin of history the better.

That would leave us free to concentrate on reducing the secular violence and stupidity without having to factor in concerns for what any cloud fairies or other fictional beings thought about things.
