Science is certainly competent to explore (and answer) the "why?" in the "by what mechanism...?" sense, but the "complete understanding...why it exists at all" is possibly, if not necessarily, outside the purview of science.

Have you read any of his books? I bought one for my dad and had a quick look through it. I might borrow it back and have a proper read.

There's little doubt that I am where I am today because of Hawking. His book, The Universe in a Nutshell, was what inspired me finally to study physics and maths as a career.

I wish I had taken my chances to tell him so. He will be missed.
