The Fat Man Of Europe?
42 Answers
Is it time to call a spade a spade and stop all these howls of "fat shaming" etc?
Surely the country, and it's inhabitants need to admit they are now getting dangerously fat, obese (and not by bmi rubbish), and as such very unhealthy?
Just how long will it be before the NHS collapses under the weight(no pun intended) of this epidemic?
I don't believe taxing people or refusing them treatment is the whole answer, I would like to see local gyms provided free, or very cheaply, a) to prevent this happening and b) to help us fatties (yes I am one) get it off. In addition I really wold like to see nutritional and cookery for girls and boys in schools.

Certainly I don't think the whinging about "fat-shaming" described in this article is very helpful at all:

The reason children are becoming obese is that many of them are fed totally inappropriate food as soon as they can chew.
Strangely I'm just back from my local High Street, having had my hair cut. (It's about the only reason I go there these days. I'd have it done online if i could). I was waiting for a bus back and the bus stop is near to Greggs (which used to be a baker's). In there was a queue of "mums" with their beloved kids in push chairs. Each of the mums naturally had the latest phone gizmo to keep them amused as they were queuing but those that were emerging were handing greasy sausage rolls and pies, crisps and fizzy drinks to their broods. The rolls and pies were wrapped in "greaseproof" paper (which wasn't) and the fat seeping through it after just a few seconds could be clearly seen. And this was at 10am.
These people are what the government likes to call "disadvantaged". They are not disadvantaged - they are bone idle and feckless. Far easier to buy a 1,000 calories worth of pie, crisps and fizzy drink for your child than to get in some cereal, milk , bread, eggs etc and prepare them a healthy breakfast. Out they all came, sat on the bench by the bus stop to eat their own stodge, catch up on Facebook (or whatever) and have a ciggie.
These poor kids will almost certainly face problems with their health long before they should.

i'm a bit conflicted about that article - I don't think its fat shaming to say the obesity has a link to cancer or for a doctor to address the issue of being obese with their patient.
However, I do think the way people address fat needs to change, being overweight can be complex thing and to say to someone "you're fat loose weight or you'll get cancer" might not be the most helpful way to get someone to loose weight

^ True but the obesity problem actually seems to be markedly higher in over-45s than it is in younger people, so I'm not sure the problem is all about feckless young mums at Gregg's.

just to try to balance that out New Judge, there is a lady at my gym who comes in with her young teen daughters usually3 times a week (that i see them) and yesterday they were discussing the healthy ratatouille they had for their lunches and what they were going to have for dinner (homemade beans on toast) plus when I'm there on weekends the place is rammed with families and their kids going swimming.

How very observant and judgemental.
How do you know they had the latest “Phone gizmos”?and how did you know they were disadvantaged?
They may have been well heeled citizens for all you knew.
Do you make observant judgements in court without knowing the evidence or do you just become judge, jury and executioner based on a quick visual of the “accused?”

By “gizmos” I mean devices. I could see that they fairly new looking devices. I don’t know whether they were disadvantaged (I strongly suspect not, by my definition, anyway). The government likes to portray people who are unable to feed their children properly as “disadvantaged” and these people were not (by my standards and probably the government's) feeding their children properly.

How many well-heeled citizens do you know who feed their infants sausage rolls from Greggs at 10am?
“Do you make observant judgements in court without knowing the evidence…”
What on Earth makes you think I am ever in a position to do that?

I had a look through the thread and remembered one similar a few years back. After a little digging I found one of my own replies on it. It is still valid.
//I think this subject is much more complex than most of us are qualified to answer. So a few questions instead. What is the link between our parents and grandparents diet, which has changed immensely since the advent of processed food and additives, and does it affect the genetic makeup of the children born after they had access to it and indeed those yet to be born? How much has the constant advertising of food products contributed to our increased food intake, and indeed the expectation of easily prepared food, combined with the message that it is a given that it as an instant form of self reward. Further more why do the ones who are suffering from the condition variously termed big boned, obese, fat, overweight or whatever always have strange haircuts that advertise there considerable presence usually dyed in a vivid hue not found in the usual range, coupled with the tightest clothes it is possible to imagine?
