Ludwig - // / care to elaborate? //

The contract for printing the old EU red style passports was done by a British company for the past 6 years.

The contract for printing the new British style blue passports - (specifically designed I believe to represent our impending post-brexit EU independent status) has been awarded to a French company.

You couldn't make it up. Not that enigmatic surely? //

In the sense that it makes no sense - yes I believe it is.

A simple ecconomic trade decision has been taken - it's not news, and it's not something you would need to make up either.

As I said, I fail to see why this is news?

Yes, you can laugh at the notion that a French company makes post-Brexit passports, if that is what passes for humour where you are - ?
Maybe ironic a better choice of word ?
Anne - I would agree, irony is what is in play here, and that is cause for a wry smile at best.
No. Deserves a wee chuckle .
just one of many commodities we buy from other nations, not sure why it's in anyway pertinent.

Who's laughing? I'm smiling wryly at the most.
I don’t see why it is ironic. We’ll leave the EU but as Brexiters have been saying since the beginning we’ll still trade with the EU – as well as with the rest of the world. What’s ironic about something we were aware of?
Judging by the number of illegals in this country, British passports must be being made all over the world.

I don't think the majority of illegal immigrants use fake passports and enter through legitimate entry points - do you?
How about this Brexiteers ?
The new UK post Brexit Blue Passport will be made in the EU.

OMG
Shocking... We must have another referendum ASAP.
Firstly we are still under single market rules so we have to put out for tender and not favour the UK. This will also be the case for other such purchases too until we fully leave.

However I hoe this continues to happen, just because we leave the EU doesn't not mean open cheque book time to UK companies to take the tax payer for a ride. Hopefully this will be a timely reminder to those companies considering such.

Maybe the debate going forward is whether such sensitive items should be made abroad?

And lastly, yes, there is a certain amount of irony given the article being manufactured.
// Firstly we are still under single market rules so we have to put out for tender and not favour the UK. //

I could be wrong but I can't see a French or German company doing the same thing, rules or no rules. Probably one of the reasons we're just as well out of the club.
...sorry, I mean the French or German government - not company.
Watched an interview on BBC Breakfast this morning with a Mr. Sutherland, an executive from De La Rue, the company makes passports for 40 countries according to him.

He didn't say which countries but I bet some are for the countries which make up the EU :-D
AH

Don't you recognise 'satirical humour'?
Disappointing but no big deal. It's not like there's a major advantage in being self sufficient in passport creation. (I trust the French aren't using cheap immigrant labour. Markets should be on a level playing field.)
shame they couldn't be made here, but i guess the matter that you have one is the important bit. Mine ran out last year and i can't see me travelling anywhere any day soon to need one.
“So should we go with the cheapest bid or insist on doing them in the UK and pay £50 million more?”

It seems in matters such as this the UK government always goes for the cheapest option. No doubt had it gone with the De La Rue bid there would now be questions asked as to why they were wasting taxpayers’ money simply to “Buy British”.

Having said that, despite what some Remainers believe, leaving the EU does not mean that business will no longer take place between the UK and the EU. It’s being portrayed as such, but nothing can be further from the truth. If it suits both the buyer and the seller, trade will continue despite the best efforts of politicians to make it difficult.

What is a shame is that the UK had decided to put the business to tender across the EU (under current EU rules). The French decided that allowing a foreign company to print French passports would compromise national security so did not offer the work outside France. We should have done likewise.

Not always, especially when it is beamed in from an unexpected source!!

I have commented many times on the way that intended humour is easily lost in written communication, it's an occupational hazard of the way we all communicate on here.

Some shrug their cyber-shoulders, some get really upset - that's the way it goes.
Agree NJ... The voice of common sense
