But back to the question, I too cannot understand the fascination with Facebook and kindred applications. Quite why I should need to be constantly in touch with friends and family is beyond me. I have a landline phone, I have a mobile phone (though few people know the number and it's rarely switched on) and I have an e-Mail address. More than adequate for anybody (who I wish to do so) to contact me should the need arise, which it seldom does. I think there is a "law" which says work expands to fill the time available. I think this can be extended to FB: "unexpurgated drivel expands to fill the airtime left on one's contract".
I'm with Zacs, ummmm and others on this: Facebook keeps me in touch with family and friends I have ever met who I still wish to know.
Also in contact with my local football team.
It has issues certainly (I'm not going to give it my phone number, than you very much, or any other details I don't wish to post there) but I reckon I benefit more than I lose, and as long as that continues I will keep using it.
