Some of the top rated comments here suggest that Middle England is not happy with Sajid Javid’s appointment Home Secretary due to his Brexit stance, which is pretty reasonable. However, it appears that his religious/racial background is a problem too.

Should we too be concerned about having a Muslim Home Secretary?

Some of the top rated comments:

1. Cynical beyond all belief. We had someone over promoted because of their gender now this chap because of his race.

2. With him and Khan in such powerful positions we will become 2nd class citizens in our own country.

3. Token

4. So a Muslim Home Secretary, what could possibly go wrong

5. We have Sadiq Khan in Londung doing an awful job now Savid will be in charge of inviting over millions more Sadiqs and Savids. Will there be any English politicians in 10 years? How long til we have King Jamal or Prince Rashid?

5. To make Sajid Javid the Home Secretary would be like putting Dracula in charge of a blood bank.

6. He'll be welcoming millions of new arrivals with open arms.

Yeah, i' is because 'e is black.

Innit.
This is Theresa May's equivalent of playing the racist card, i.e. say anything against this and we'll report you for racism. But I feel very, very uncomfortable about his appointment because I think it will give others in this country more incentive to play the racist card too.
I have a problem with any religions devotee, how bright can they be if they believe all that old pony?
I woner who they all think should have got the job instead. Surely there must be an underemployed white man on the Tory benches? The Tories used to have nothing else.
Clarion, people in this country need no incentive to play the racist card, or the religious one.
Anyone not happy with his appointment is obviously a racist or islamophobe or something.
Jno, I don't think you understand what it's like to live an area that is full of people who do this on a regular basis. Rochdale, Oldham, Bury, to name three areas on my doorstep. I don't ever re-call anyone from the Windrush generation doing that. And I knew quite a few people related to those people. To suffer insults and obscenities from some people on a daily basis, then have them reply by saying they have been racially abused or discriminated against, is a regular thing for some people around here. You don't know the half of it. Why do you think it never gets into the news?
I suspect there is some element of truth behind the thinking Teresa the Appeaser has appointed him due to his race. Labour are going to be well stuck now with any attack.

Personally I dont care either way on the religious bit although, like TTT, I am suspicious of anyone believing in a set of fairy tales no matter what version.

For me the biggest issue is May has appointed yet another Remainer an indicator I think of her trying to not leave the EU by the back door.

The next big question is how long can useless May cling on?
SP, I would be interested to know how these comments are attributed to "Middle England" ?

TTT

My fault here. I mis-described Javid as ‘Muslim’.

From Wikipedia:

“He has previously said that his family's heritage is Muslim, but he does not practise any religion”

This description dovetails with what I think of as ‘middle England’:

The phrase "Middle England" is a socio-political term which generally refers to middle class or lower-middle class people in England who hold traditional conservative or right-wing views.

That’s from Wikipedia.

I would collectively describe Daily Mail and Daily Express readers as being typically ‘middle England’. Note - it’s not a pejorative term. Not to be mixed up with ‘Little Englanders’. When is definitely pejorative.

No.

I’m referring to two sets of reactions, one where people are unhappy about his appointment due to his Brexit stance (fair enough), and the other where people are not happy about his religious background.

That’s the crux of the question.
Agree that anyone with fairy tale believes are a bit suspicious but I object to yet another Remainer.

She should have had the guts to put a Brexiters in position.
Sajid Javid in 2010, “My own family’s heritage is Muslim. Myself and my four brothers were brought up to believe in God, but I do not practise any religion. My wife is a practising Christian and the only religion practised in my house is Christianity.

I think we should recognise that Christianity is the religion of our country.”

or maybe he's just the best person for the job? (out of a dwindling pool)
He has been described as a 'lukewarm' Remainer.
"Lukewarm" - wasn't that a character from porridge?
So it would appear SP you think everyone who reads and comments on the Daily mail is "Middle England" ?

Nothing to do with it being a free publication then? And if you read some other comments on the rag you will find they are certainly not conservative either.

Okay youngmafbog, but I didn’t want to necessarily tar Daily Mail readers with this brush. I get your point, but let’s not get distracted.
