At least you wont get arrested at the airport! Is this what a German led EU will become? Ok I'm no fan of taking kids out of school for Holidays but ultimately it's a matter for the parents. This reeks of police state tactics to me.

They are breaking German law so what is the problem? People cant pick and choose the laws they want to abide by, if they dont like it campaign for a change of it.

I agree with YMB - this isn't a new law - anyone with kids will have known the law before they started breeding and if they don't like it they should elect a Government that will change it - until that happens they abide by the law or pay the (quite large) fine.

I'm interested that "home education is effectively prohibited" and "parents are legally obliged to send their children to school" - very different from the much more laissez faire situation here in the UK.

I'm bothered by the fact that the police are looking for children going on holiday, and not focusing on people who might kill us. Ok, it's German law, but it's a dumb law.

My Mum used to take us on holiday during term time in the summer, and in March to go skiing every year. She'd sort it with the teachers that we'd have plenty of homework to do, and we'd always do it, plus we'd make a scrap book of the culture we visited.. so shells and sand stuck in the book when we were in Greece, as well as some Greek words we learnt and information about the places we visited - volcanoes and caves, for example. Same for if we were in Spain / France / USA. I know I was very lucky to go away on holiday to these places, but my point is that we would be learning whilst we were away - the national curriculum, as well as about the place we were staying. And I'm better for it!!

The UK fine people who take their children out of school during term time. It has nothing to do with the EU, these are national laws, which as the article explains, varies from EU state to EU state.

What is a dumb law? Making parents send their kids to school? It's thinking like that which breeds a bunch of illiterates, also sends a poor message to the kids who as they grow up will start to think they can do what they like. Hang on ........

And if the whole class did it (and it wouldn't be all at the same time) then chaos would ensue.

People break laws that they consider unjust/inconsequential all the time. Jaywalking and gay sex are or have been illegal in many places but people still do them because the law is either unjust or a nuisance.

This seems like a matter for the parents. If you absolutely must have a child for some reason, they're ultimately your responsibility.

youngmafbog - no discontent, ever. Our friends were happy to hear our stories and we'd bring back sweets or little gifts. And the teacher gave us work to do whilst we were away so we never missed out on lessons. I can never ever remember it ever being an issue, with anyone.

TTT doubt very much if you will be taking your children out of school so why does it worry you so much? My understanding is that is the Local Authority who make local "school rules" for their area. Agree with Gromit - your anti EU rants are getting more and more pathetic.

I just thought people might be interested to see how other countries do it maggie. The amount of things the reamainers are prepared to tolerate before they'll admit their beloved EUSSR is not viable is quite disturbing too.

the parents were not arrested. They were questioned, then allowed to continue on their holidays. If they can't come up with a good explanation they'll be fined - exactly as they would be in Britain.
