Trade wars are typical for wars, in that nobody wins really. So no, the EU is not being stupid in responding. Quite the opposite, indeed.

Laissez faire is at the core of world capitalism. That a nation can trade globally without Governmental interference or protectionism. It is the way trade has worked successfullully fot 200 years.
Now, some bloke who invented the Aprrentice, a TV show that nobody watches any more, wants to impose tariffs.
Good luck with that when nobody will trade with you anymore.

Ir it's a pain, because the US was meant to be the solution to any lost EU trade. Not sure how easy that'll be without accepting a trade deal that I'm sure Trump will want to be "the best deal in the history of trade deals, maybe ever" -- from *his* viewpoint, at least, which from everyone else's viewpoint will be crap.

Go on the Jim Lad, tell us how a tariff on EU steel and aluminium is going to affect post Brexit Britain. When we can make such products without German "interference" perhaps we can use that facility as a bargaining chip in negotiations with the US.

The US is putting tariffs on China, EU, any one who can compete with the US.
The hope is that steel will become cheaper for US Construction Companies. My guess is it won’t.

Even Liam Fox was going on about how the UK was planning "countermeasures", Togo, so I'm at least 100% confident that the "EU tariffs" Trump imposed are also hitting UK steelmakers.

We are, after all, still in the EU for the moment.

All I am saying is what ought to be obvious: these tariffs will harm the UK (and the EU, and the US), and it doesn't bode well for future trade deals if the US is going to be so protectionist.

On this one yes. It is the EU Trump is getting at not the UK, we are unfortunately still in the EU so caught up in their mess. When we leave we will be free to negotiate with The Donald.

All Mr Trump is doing is balancing the USA's books with the world. It is all fine and dandy for countries when it was going all their way but when the US wants to reduce the massive trade deficit and make it a fairer playing field for themselves all the complainers are out.

The Donald is completing another of his manifestos pledge, odd how some on here just cant get that.
