I'm struggling to find a source for this but I swear that, during the filming of Being John Malkovich, the director told the actor playing John Malkovich how to play a certain role. The actor then said, "but John Malkovich wouldn't do that." The director insisted that John Malkovich certainly would do it... which, of course, rather bemused John Malkovich, who was playing himself.
Your original suggestion rather reminds me of that incident. Wish I could find the source.

not very near BUT
a doctor sent in a child to hospital as Still's Disease and got a discharrge letter saying basically it wsasnt Still's diesase but good try. The GP replied that he had been Still's houseman and there was no doubt that Still would have said....
