There doesn't need to have been an altercation between the two.
The attacker could be psychotic and didn't care who he stabbed; it could be a hate crime where any Muslim or Shia or Sunni Muslim, or Asian, or man, or elderly person could be the target; it could be mistaken identity or any other reason you can think of.

No hate crime, just cultural differences.

Community leaders may be able to help with the exact targetting of police resources to avoid drawing the wrong conclusions due to unawareness of subtleties within ethnic groups.
