Oh, the thread is about banning mobile phones in ENGLISH schools?? I think it actually said UK schools Danny! No wonder I want independence for Scotland, constantly ignored! My grandchildren (except the youngest aged 10) all carry mobile phones to University and school. Understanding is that they are switched off during lessons but can be used at break and lunch times. Good way for parents/grandparents to give info about changes in plans etc and also a safety measure.

Pencil and paper and mental arithmetic for calculations. NOT a flipping phone. No wonder some youngsters today cannot work out the cost of 10 apples at 25 pence each.

Apologies Maggie, no snub to Scotland intended.

I paid for something the other day cost £6.25 I gave her a £10 note and £1.25 - so she could give me a fiver back! I got my £1.25 back straight way as this completely mystified the assistant then she gave me my £3.75 change, I gave her them both back in exchange for a fiver! Good ole mobile phones eh, takes away the need to learn simple arithmetic!

TTT, the till told her what to give as change. If she /he had not taken their phone to school she/he would have the capability of mentally calculating the correct change. Not in spaths world though.
Question Author
calculators can help but are no good if you don't know the method.
Spath, even fashion designers need to know some arithmetic.

I think phones should banned in class. They're a distraction.

If people are concerned about their children not being able to get in touch they could get a cheapo PAYG phone from Tesco. At least they'd be spared the urge to constantly message people they'll see all day anyway.

Question Author
yes sparlkly but surely she should have been able to see that 11.25 - 6.25 = 5.00 and therefore why I gave her £11.25. She just ignored the £1.25.
