If they are already part Iranian, they will feel that they ought to be safe to travel there......like Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe did.

And her case has shown just how little assistance the UK is able to give to anyone also holding a British passport.
Question Author
Yes and as demonstrated they are not!
So warning them that they will be unable to call on the British Embassy/Consulate for assistance is entirely sensible. They are not being told not to go.
As jack points out, the advice is not that people should not travel - but that support in the event of their detention is going to be limited.

On the basis that people with dual nationality are going to have family ties to the country, it's unlikely that they would respond to being 'told not to go - which is why that is not what is being said.
Question Author
yeah but who in their right mind would contemplate going anyway?
TTT - // yeah but who in their right mind would contemplate going anyway? //

People with family to see who may need support - there are all kinds of reasons why people will take a calculated risk to be with their loved ones, it's not a matter of 'stupidity'.
/yeah but who in their right mind would contemplate going anyway?/

People who were born, or have family living, in Iran for starters.
Question Author
then why did they move away in the first place? ...and why did they retain Iranian nationality? that's what seems to be the sticking point here.
or the soldier who fought for one side and then ( er later) went on holiday to the other side !

erm - dont arrest me I'm British ! used to work in the empire but hasnt for years. These are called extra territorial rights and you know they went in 1914

so you are subject to all the laws that anyone else is. It is just the british consul whom I must say at the best of times is useless wont go near you

When you look at Dom on morning teevee ( just after jerry Kyle - yeah good inn-he?) searching for pick pockets, you never hear
" you no arrest me - I am roomarnian pick pocket"
and now you know the reason why
Perhaps they are spies TTT. That's the reason most of these backward puppet governments bang up their visitors,as an excuse :-(
Would you like me to ask every single person this applies to, or would it be possible for you to (grudgingly) agree that there are many people to whom this advice might be applicable?
urbi et orbe baby
it applies to the city and the world
( RCs will recognise the popey reference)

a country's laws always apply to a visiting foreign national
( I think a 'duuuh' applies here)

yeah OK I am not liable to call up for national service in France or Turkey but that is because I am not a French or Turkish national
not stupid at all, if they have family in these places, must be hard not to go and see them.
TTT - // then why did they move away in the first place? ...and why did they retain Iranian nationality? that's what seems to be the sticking point here. //

For myriad reasons - work, family, work and family, posting by employers, looking for a better life, and so on and so on.

I fail to see why it vexes you so much, when people retain dual nationalities all over the world for exactly the same reasons as Iranian nationals.

For some reason, only the fact that Iranians are being advised that visiting their country may be problematic is giving you a crimp in your trolleys.

Since I imagine you are not affected, why are you getting so het up about it?
I've been to Iran. Lovely place. I'd go again tomorrow.
I'll start a whip round for you.
no need, I'm off to that part of the world shortly anyway.
From the gov.uk Dual Citizenship page, "As a dual national you cannot get diplomatic help from the British government when you are in the other country where you hold citizenship."

For example, if you hold both British and Chinese citizenship you cannot get diplomatic help from the UK when you’re in China.
