As Ludwig said, this is not about having a sense of humour, its about the lack of judgement in replying to a request linked to his job. He was replying to a suggestion sent in for some Vegan and Vegetarian recipes to be published in the Waitrose Food Magazine. I have no problem with the subject, just the context in which it was written.
i find it sad the amount of disparaging and nasty comments directed at vegans/veggies. We'd all be a lot healthier if we reduced the amount of meat we consume and ate more veg and so would the planet. Live and let live or try to...

many vegetarians, vegans so often appear to be hypocritical, they do condemn those who eat meat, whereas for the most part i haven't seen much evidence of the other way round. I find it galling that he has stepped down, and yes i am aware that one should be a little more circumspect in one's writing of e mails.
Well, as a vegetarian of 38 years (I'm a lot older than that, but that's when I stopped eating meat), I don't condemn anyone.
I do ARGUE with meat-eaters, though, particularly the "ooo aren't the fluffy little lambs so cute" variety (when the next day the fluffy little lambs are served up for dinner). I don't mind the 'farmer' mentality - just stock, raise them, eat them. Don't like it, but there is a philosophical difference.

Seriously? Most meat eaters take the mick out of vegetarians and vegans, they seem to be fair game to some.
If this was a comment made on a private FB page I could not be less bothered. This comment was made as a reply to a business email and as such showed lack of judgement and hopefully he has learned a lesson.

he's lying. His email shows clearly he doesn't respect vegans (I don't know how he feels about the others). Talking about force-feeding or killing them isn't to be taken literally, but it does share the angry language that passes for debate these days and that people never use when talking of those they respect. And the minute he starts mentioning hypocrisy, you can tell he's entirely serious in his disrespect for them.
