Every crime has a prescribed punishment; discounts are available eg, for pleading guilty. Should crimes such as this be defined as "inhuman behaviour" and have a bonus added to the penalty? ie, say 50% added to what the prescribed punishment should be.

Apparently the street has been plagued by burglaries for years, including a 92 yr old woman who was burgled a number of times and died a nervous wreck. Meanwhile the London plod manage to arrest more people for the cardboard Grenfell fire than the real one and stabbings on the streets occur on a daily basis. Still, as long as they are ticking the pc boxes. I can only hope that the scumbags get a taste of their own medicine, and the old man pulls through. What are the chances of him being housed in luxury for 12 months with a nice wedge to tide him over and alleviate his feelings of despair?

I suspect he may die as often happens in these cases and if he does survive, what then?? He won't feel safe in his own home any more and any happiness he had in his life will surely be gone. Should the poor old man die then it is murder in the course of theft. 50 odd years ago the punishment was 6 weeks in prison until Mr Harry Allen came to visit at 8 o'clock one morning.

Whoever did this is a thug, pure and simple; there can be no qualification and no mitigation and they need to be charged and sentenced to the full extent the Law allows.
I wish Mr Gouldstone a speedy and complete recovery, and as much peace of mind as he is able.
