There were plenty of people this morning bidding on tickets for Chris Evans charity bash : £40,000 for one table at a do, £13,000 for a couple of tickets in a VIP tent. 'only' £10 a lottery ticket for something. It amazes me just how much money is about and yet how little in some parts of the country. Its disgraceful that many people can just spend £40K like that and a nurse has to work all year with overtime to make that amount.
I really can't believe the callousness of some of your responders. No wonder the rich get richer on the backs of the poor. It was ever thus. Perhaps some of your respondents would like to return to the good old days when children were sent up chimneys and workhouses were rife.

That's the trouble with society today. It's all me, me, me. While that attitude is rife there will never be peace or justice.
tax credits housing benefits disabled benefits child benefit, unemployed get free dental...list goes on, no wonder the country is in debt and rising, people having children they cannot afford, but carry on having more anyway...(i'm entitled) generation after generation i want..im entitled, feral children products of above generation f this f that, give me, not to mention the incommers who have caught on to the freebies, hell it's gone as far as africa asia.
mean while those of us who have actually worked, cannot get a doctors appointment or long nhs waiting list for x surgery, or cancer treatment..do not get old or sick, to many hands, they used to say the war on want, i think the country has to many uneducated in the right fields and to many mmm lazy miscreants, and to many foreign again uneducated third fourth generation who will not learn english..but who will live on benefits for life, shoosh dont say anything less you a phobe..
Celtigra. You write “That's the trouble with society today. It's all me, me, me. While that attitude is rife there will never be peace or justice.”

Oh Celtigra, at last some words of wisdom.

I’ve watched society degenerate from something hopeful in the 60s and 70s, then through Thatcher’s wilfully destructive regime, Blair’s pale-pink copy of Thatcherism, to now, where I am old, tired, and sometimes losing hope.

But it WILL change, it will. Nothing lasts forever, Celtigra. All regimes die, all things change. Capitalism has only been around for a few hundred years. Our time will come again. Keep the fire lit.

"Its disgraceful that many people can just spend £40K like that and a nurse has to work all year with overtime to make that amount."

Why?

Some people have more money and/or have been more successful than others - there's nothing "disgraceful" about that, it is just a simple fact of life.

"That's the trouble with society today. It's all me, me, me. While that attitude is rife there will never be peace or justice."

You're quite correct - it is all me me me. But if you are going to be honest with yourself, which I suspect you won't be, it is the same for everybody.

People are only interested in their own particular circumstances.

I am ONLY interested in my wife and kids....if that means the chav down the road is hungry, on what planet is that my problem?

I am providing for me and mine. I don't want to provide for others.
bainbrig, chnge will only come when we have a military ultra right wing government, say good by to all the mafia drug gangs, illegal migrants foreign benefit scroungers, all the prison rapists paedos murderers either brits or foreign jihadists or want to be's liberal
socialists arrested..as labour cons mp's lords accounts scrutinized.
armed security forces with all the weapons and tec they need, treason murder rape..capital punishment no recourse, oh sounds like nazi germany...not really...because the army is not elected, just perhaps generals with vision..kemal atatürk springs to mind, clean it all up all the above..have you any better ideas, give everyone a million pounds...our laws have gone soft and were reaping its outcome and all it's ...well you know.
I do admire the Brainbrigs of the world, because they live in a society I'm sure all of us would like to live in. However, that society simply doesn't exist, so he/she is incredibly naive, bordering on ignorant, on how society operates.
Deskdiary - Try some massive charity.
You will feel GREAT.
Your family will love you even more.
Theland - I don't want to.

As far as I'm concerned, the tax I pay is my charity.

The government decides in its wisdom who to give my money to, which I resent, so I will not give any more of MY money to others because as far as I'm concerned that's taking money away from my kids.
deskdiary. Your comment “he/she is incredibly naive, bordering on ignorant, on how society operates” is not really an argument, is it, so to answer in the same vein, I’d say ... what’s the word? Runt? Punt? Shunt? Never mind, it’ll come to me.

BillB
It's not an argument - just simply a statement of fact.
"As far as I'm concerned, the tax I pay is my charity."

It may come as no surprise when I say I'm with you 100%, DD. I have (and continue to) pay what in my terms are vast sums to the Exchequer to do with as he and his colleagues think fit. Some of them I don't mind. I don't mind paying for the defence of the realm; for the police to keep vermin off the streets who may threaten me and mine; for a health service should I ever need it. Unfortunately these services are in decline and are by and large no longer fit for purpose. The principle reason for this is that huge sums are being spent on services for people who never have and never will contribute a penny to the national coffers despite being fit and able to do so. I'm certainly not going to add any of my hard earned in the form of charity donations to enrich their lives any further. Far from make me feel better it would make me feel sick.
When will austerity end? When the campaigning for the next general election begins, is my guess:-/
And if the government play to the greed of the nation, and keep taxes low for popularity, what about the shortfall? People suffer.
But! Are you simply content to simply keep to the letter of the tax laws? Nothing given from the heart?
Greed?
Yes greed.
Vote for a government that provides for the helpless.
It's not greed to go to work. That's a ridiculous thing to say.
"...and keep taxes low for popularity,"

taxes are not low. Someone earning £60k pa (a modest income these days) pays just shy of 28% of his income to the Exchequer.
Unfortunately austerity never started.

After Labour bankrupted the country once again we should have battened down chopped the civil servants to the bone (after all those useless 5 a day coordinate on 50k plus) and gone for short sharp shock. Unfortunately the Tories were shackled by the liberals and spending was not cut hence the problems we still have.

Bummer really.
