And by the way a Michigan judge has just ruled that a law banning FGM is unconstitutional.

There are leftists who will pass their (or more likely other people's) children through fire to worship Moloch.
I can only agree with Togo and v_e.
Link to that, v_E?
I do hope you can find both logical and moral satisfaction in the judicial decision, Jim.
50 million won’t change the mindset of centuries of mysoginistic practices.

About as much use as a cat flap on a submarine, pure folly.
Depends on whether it's effective or not.

So what's that ? A £500 bribe to each village chieftain to stamp it out ? That won't go far.
In Mitchigan, is banning bumping off your aging parents, unconstitutional also ?
And why didn't individual States accept the law anyway ?
It always astonishes me how much money we throw at Africa and the place never improves......

Anyway, that's not why I'm posting.

Bigbad has said "toss-giving-ometer".......I absolutely love that, and am going to steal it and use it as mine in the future. What a brilliant expression.
Just old recycled stuff DD. Been done before and better.

WARNING. not for the precious amongst you.

^^^that's even better.

Anyway, FGM, if these backward, feral, people choose to live in the dark ages and needlessly mutilate their women, I'd rather my money not be spent in trying to drag them into some semblance of a normality that they will never accept or believe.
We can't save the world so better to save money and let the savages continue savaging each other.
We can't stop it, so why not let it take a place far down the list of priorities , below feeding our own people, helping our own cancer patients, etc etc etc the list goes on.
With you there The Land
Nominated by Ronald Reagan... not exactly who I'd expect to choose a liberal judge...

And, no, v-e -- no moral satisfaction, and frankly nothing but puzzlement at the moment. I'm busy reading the ruling right now, but... well, I'm a little hurt that you'd think I'd be in any way "satisfied" by such a ruling.
OK, so, I read the judgement now. It smacks of what I can only describe as legal pedantry that is -- rightly -- baffling. Essentially the judgement amounts to "yes, FGM is a despicable crime, but it's up to the individual states to deal with it, and the Federal Congress cannot." Maybe that makes sense under the vagaries of the US constitution, but, if so, then the US Constitution sucks.
As does the law generally.
On a more positive note, I am sure that I read recently that FGM rates had significantly reduced across Africa. In that case, wouldn't further investment in the hopes of pushing it out of existence altogether be welcome?
Most of the time, I read legal judgements and am fairly confident that I can follow the reasoning and understand the point being made and its justification. I simply don't get this one -- I suspect that it's entirely a US-based conundrum.
^^^Yes it would be welcome, of it stopped it.

But it won't stop it.

So what's the point of trying when the money could better spent in the UK.
