Deskdiary, of course the intent was racist, but my point is that by objecting to the word black, the victim is in effect agreeing with the thug and therefore handing him more ammunition. It needs to be turned on its head. ‘Yes, you’re absolutely right. I’m black”. That way the attack falls flat on its face.

My, how things have changed. Years ago I worked at an electric board. All the meter readers were white with just one, a large Jamaican chap, same colour as the ace of spades. They all had nicknames, his was bin liner,and no, he was not offended, just amused.

One day at lunch one of the readers says that Mrs so and so such at one address was not left a receipt after her slot meter was emptied.

She said "it was a big black chap" To which our Jamaican friend in his superb accent said " How do know it was me"

I trust you also call out those who are genuinely bigoted too. If so, that’s great. But if you only concentrate on those who (and you don’t clarify whether these people are justified) those who point out instances of bigotry, then surely that’s a bit lopsided.

If he lost his job, I can understand that as most companies have a policy which protects them against ‘bad actors’.

Legislation dies change mindsets.

Equal pay, smoking, seat belts, deregulation etc.

Leglislation comes about in many cases because we are changing and we need our laws to reflect that change.

Perhaps it’s a bilateral thing. Legislation changes mindsets because those mindsets are open to change.

John Barnes was a fantastic footballer but an absolutely crap manager...he won't accept he was a crap manager, he blames racism for why he failed at football management.

Sp, abuse only works for the abuser if offence is taken. His intention is to upset you. Carry on giving him the ammunition and he’ll carry on firing it. I’m not suggesting that laws should not exist, simply that on a personal level people need to deal with bigots differently - and the way to do that is by disappointing them.

That’s fair enough. You know yourself better than anyone.

However as we the examples I have given (smoking, seat belts), legislation can change people’s mindsets.

If people didn’t stand up and say, “I find that unacceptable”, how would people know what social boundaries were?

I've been called "FC" and worse by strangers and never been in the least bit offended by it because I know the abuser ignorant (certainly of me) and probably stupid. I find snide innuendos by strangers who are equally ignorant of me, but definitely not stupid far more offensive.
