Royal Navy Sent Into English Channel ….
….to help tackle migrant crossings following request from Sajid Javid.

What is the Navy going to do to ‘tackle’ the problem? Will it take anyone it picks up back to France – or give them safe passage to the UK? If the latter, it is not ‘tackling’ the problem. It is encouraging it.

a usual suspect on AB realising that 'doing something' may not be the answer
or an answer at all
the new year really has started anew
and there was I expecting a naomi wodge [a standard naomi] of
"yes yes arm them with bells and whistles
and so when they run these brown terrorists and their awful children down their screams are drowned (geddit) with loudspeakers playing the very english hallylooja chorus just like a scene in Apocalypse Now"
and sending Javeed ( djav to his few friends) to France wont do any good - when he says to the Maire of wherever "dont you have a law to obey?"
the maire or whoever will say " desole - je ne parle pas Urdoo"
difficult prob

I’d have thought the only thing they can do is pick them up. Pointless otherwise. As for encouraging them, the numbers involved are pretty small and I’m not sure any of these boats ever sink. Unlike the disasters in the Med for example. The aim of these boats presumably is to put down secretly on the coast and “disappear” their “crew” rather than be apprehended by the authorities.
This whole thing seems to me to be more about Mr Javid making a pitch for the shores of No 10 with Mr Williamson monitoring his progress rather jealously from the coast and seemingly determined to stop or at least embarrass him. All a bit pathetic.

I’d have thought getting picked up would NOT be what they want. A choice between landing unseen, and quite possibly being able to disappear, was preferable to ending up in a holding centre. These are not by the sound of it the sane fort of people as those on the Med. Many appear to be wealthier Iranians. And they are effectively victims of organised crime : willing victims no doubt, but victims nonetheless.
But not as desperate as many of those who risk life and limb coming from Libya to Italy.

"was preferable to ending up in a holding centre" Generally they are not though are they and that is the issue. Most are just given a train ticket to lunar house and told to go there. Most dont of course.
It is widely believed by UK authorities that larger boats are launcing these small thinkgs right on the edge of British waters. If this is the case then the Nay will have some use, otherwise they will simply turn into a taxi service.
The answer is to intern all. If you can claim genuine asylum then fine we will help you out (until it becomes safe to return) but for those that are not genuine then we should ship them back to their country of origin. Those that have destroyed papers will have to remain interned until we establish who they are (via their embassy) - and then shipped back. Allow them mobile phones whilst interned then the message will get out fast we are no longer a soft touch.

Really ymb? A migrant off a boat who makes it to the coast undetected hands himself over to the authorities and is given a free train ticket to claim asylum???
I think I’d want to see some evidence of that.
I’m not an expert on this but I thought asylum was only claimed by migrants who come into contact with the authorities. Either voluntarily or otherwise. If I arrived on a boat like that I’d want to slip in unnoticed.
