//Shoppers have earned more than £30,000 by recycling plastic bottles in the first supermarket trial of reverse vending machines. The scheme, piloted by Iceland, rewards people with a voucher worth 10p for every deposit of a bottle bought at the shop.//

A great success it seems. Should other supermarkets follow suit and if they did would you use the service? I think it's a great idea.

Were it "each", then I might be interested.
Every little helps!*

*Wrong supermarket for this pun.
I think the bottle manufacturers should pay a deposit on every bottle they make and get the deposit back when/if the bottles recycled.
IN Beijiung you can pay for train travel with plastic bottles, and in Istanbul you can get dog food from a machine paying with them. Great ideas I thought
We have 4 wheelie bins and 1 of them takes plastics
This is the norm in Canada. You go to the recycle centre maybe once a month with your cans and plastic and they pay you. Kids often scour neighborhoods for littered plastic bottles and aluminium cans to get money back on it, so its a win win situation. I've been saying for years they should do this in the UK
I stay away from the local recycling centre/tip here. The parking and car movement in there is a nightmare and one car scratch or dent costs too much to repair. Mind you when I was in the US the local system was great. Onec a week, you drove in with your stuff sorted and drove slowly around a one way track. There were plastic, glass and paper stops where there were people to unload, you could hop out and help if you wanted to but didn't have to. There was no manoevring or overtaking, everyone just queued for their turn. It took me a few visits to realise that the people manning the site were cons complete with armed guard!
Morrison’s having a bottle return scheme is news to me and I work at Morrison’s. Maybe it’s a pilot scheme.

I know the ‘Drop the box’ training is only in pilot mode at the moment.
We did this with glass bottles when I was a child. It's not exactly new.
Cashier, one old penny a bottle when I was a lad.
That's interesting, I didn't know people used to do that. Where did you cash them in? (Apologies Naomi if diverting the thread, just interested.)

No problem, Krom.
You took certain bottles back to the shop.

I like this scheme but also shop online, not sure if stores could incorporate a collection of old bottles when they deliver your shopping.

I wouldn't be too bothered about the payment.
glass juice bottles used to have a money back scheme here..as a child it was a nice little earner !!
