Decided to give my kitchen a good clean out today. Couldn't believe how many packets of food I had that were well out of date - and don't get me started on herbs and spices! Have only done 2 cupboards and 4 drawers up to now so who knows what I may yet find.

I hate how quickly things go out of date. For example, it's only me and the ms in the house atm, and i'm the only one who eats marmalade out of the two of us, and it says once opened use within a month.. Well i only really have it on Saturdays . I doubt i'll use it all within a month...
I so need to do this. My cupboard doors are just about closing, there's so much that's sitting over the shelf edges. Trouble is, midway I'm ready to give up. I got rid of numerous boxes of out of date tea yesterday...that's a start. ;)
I went through this pain just before Christmas. Trouble is, once you've started you have to do EVERY cupboard and drawer.

I keep seeing this on FB, which is thread appropriate.

You should declutter your life and throw out anything that does not bring you joy. So far I've chucked out the electricity bill, the vegetables in the bottom of the fridge and the bathroom scales!
If you had a can of beans that was out of date.. would you keep it or lob it?
Store the marmalade in the fridge .I doubt it will be unsafe to eat after a month .
I do, it says once opened, store in fridge and consume within 1 month
Tesco finest wouldn't you know
Out of date...or BBE spath. By how many months/years?
Tinned stuff lasts forever.
If I open a jar of jam, it goes in the fridge and lasts forever, there is only me and I rarely have toast and jam.
Tinned stuff will be fine! Herbs and spices are no good tho. They deteriorate once they've been opened so anything open and out of date will be like adding random dust to your food.

I agree with Anne on the marmalade. Keep eating it unless you see mould.
I got some beans dated 2/19

I've had em a while.

If it got to this time next year surely they'd be gone?
They're fine spath...

//Canned goods: Most expiration dates on foods in cans range from 1 to 4 years—but keep the food in a cool, dark place and the cans undented and in good condition, and you can likely safely double that shelf life from 3 to up to 6 years.//

Oldest use by date I found was 2002. New Year resolution - only buy what you need at the time. Like your declutter tips barmaid.
Interesting, will remember that one.
Having sampled loads of NZ Green lipped Mussels in Malta a few weeks back I dug out a box (1kg) over the weekend from the shed freezer. I put the box in the fridge overnight to defrost and started tucking in to them with vinegar and pepper.Wife was curious to see them and asked where we got them from. I replied "Costco". She looked for,and found, the sell by date. 3/1/2014 on the box.
I didn't finish the rest but they tasted OK and no ill effects thus far.
out of date shellfish? LOL lucky lad.

Freezing things does help though
Don't throw out any food...it will become very scarce very soon.
Were they cooked mussels?
