"Without your great nation, this Continent would not be what it is today," they wrote.
Shame our own anti British aren't similarly enthusiastic.

What they are saying is ‘without your great nations money and access to your markets and our ownership of your fishing waters this continent would be bankrupt, so PLEEEEEAAAASSSSSEEEE don’t leave’
As an also...

I would walk into the room and ask then two questions. (Depending on the answers would depend on subsidiary questions).

1. Why do you think the UK voted to leave?
2. With the (actual) answer to that question what do you think will make the UK change it’s mind.

Sqad's back in the UK ??
Been back quite a while;-)
Nobody told me lb (haha) ..
I think he's North/Westish?? Is that near you LOL.
Blimey, yes it is !
TTT et al.

Been back in the UK for over a year now.
I have not settled as i loved living in Spain but a decision was arrived at following an informed discussion with Mrs sqad.
Mrs sqad has settled well.

TTT....i don't have a pop at the UK and i am not anti-British but what does *** me off is the uninformed and ignorant comments made by people on AB such as TTT denigrating the health services on the Continent. It is of the highest standard and certainly equal and if not superior to the NHS.
This is based on my personal experience as both patient and employee, but of course only on selected parts of both services.

Sqad, health services in the eu erm are they free at the point of delivery, can i just walk in get healed, without a credit card or insurance...like you can in the uk.
A very nice letter I thought. I thought it might crop up here, but expected a chorus of derision.
Which we got eventually of course....
I agree with sqad about the health services. Just because it’s free at the point of use - which of course is something to be proud of - doesn’t make it necessarily the most effective. You only have to look at our worrying cancer referral rates ...
fender......yes of course you can, providing that you have worked in that country, paid sufficient taxes in that country, then of course one can indulge in the benefits of that country.
If you haven't then you cannot benefit and have to provide your own insurance.
Tha't seems fair, doesn't it ?
I think it would help if Tora opened his posts with OI!

No, it's not fair: it contravenes the new "human right" to travel and settle anywhere and have all your needs provided for in your chosen "home". (Obviously unacquainted with the Marrakesh Declaration which Mrs May has recently signed up to)
Regarding comparing the NHS with other health services, published in the Lancet is this information:
http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(18)30994-2/fulltext
I think this is the latest version, the UK is 23rd of 195 countries.
I stand accused of being anti-British (which I am not) but, hey, let's shoot the messenger who simply prefers unemotional facts. If it is the choice put to me then I would rather pay and be healed than suffer/die for free.
Why do people keep banging on about the NHS being free, it aint free it is funded from general taxation and National Insurance comtributions. paid by us.
^^^doesn't happen often, but I completely agree with you.

It irritates the bejesus out of me when people refer to the NHS as being free. The absurd amount I pay in tax tells a very different story.

Ironically, of course, the only people it is truly free to are the people who do not (and in some cases have never) contributed.
That's what "free" means in those circumstances. The individual doesn't pay because society has deemed it a right for citizens and funds out of public taxation.
Deskdiary, the NHS is free at the point of delivery.
Question Author
sqad: ".... TTT denigrating the health services on the Continent." - I have never denigrated the health services on the continent I denigrate the ethos, the barbarity of caring more about whether the person can pay that about getting on with giving them care. Similarly, I say the NHS is the envy of the world, not for the quality of the care but for the ethos of fixing you up first and asking questions later. No doubt the actual care is better in many places abroad, ...if you can afford it. Watch this film about the US health system: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0386032/?ref_=nv_sr_4
that is what they mostly do on the continent. Barbaric. Yes I do have experience of continental health systems.
