as an aside, if you're a grandparent/aunt/uncle/godparent to child(ren) why don't they go the whole hog and just have 'Supervising Adult and Child' areas?

I can't speak for others but I don't see any reason for having gender specific signs when clearly parents can be male or female (or one of all the other30 odd genders that seem to be recognised now). The only issue is at what stage signs should be replaced. I'd leave that to the supermarkets. I wouldn't want a law forcing them all to change them overnight but that isn't what's happening.
