The highly organised Netherlands is geared up for the cyclist but even there insurance for cyclists is not compulsory nor are helmets.

where as I understand the reaction it's not practical to set this up, you'd need DVLA x 1000 with attendant laws. Better to simply enforce the current law. Anyione over 5 on the pavement is prosecuted. Red lights similar, any cycling offence similar, the problem is that we have stopped enforcing the law in this area.

What does a police officer do when the errant cyclists claim they carry no ID and give false particulars? They would then have to impound the cycle until the rider claims it back with sufficient ID to be issued with a summons.

I've never been worried, when leaving a parked car of a cyclist potentially damaging it. A cyclist could only damage your car by seriously damaging themselves also.

One thing is for sure is that people don't give cyclists enough room when overtaking.

If a cyclist is moving at a rate of knots and has no handlebar grips then they can key the whole length of your car without hurting themselves at all. Little *** used to do that for a laugh in a nearby town.

retro, you confiscate the bike and get their details, when they have paid their fine and produced ID to verify their details they can have the bike back.

So what good is it holding a bike in a police station when you have no idea who owns it? Seems like a waste of time, space and money. Not to mention effort.

Then by making the cyclists pay insurance and registering their cycles it will alleviate the cost and effort.
If the bike is not claimed after a certain time the police willl do what they have always done.Send unclaimed property or certain property from the commission of crimes to auction.

My point is Spath that some bike riders ride very quickly in built up areas, one nearly took me out last week when I was pushing a buggy, could have been really nasty, and they are quite capable of misjudging their space and accidentally scoring down the side of a car without damaging themselves at all.
I'm personally not a fan of the idea of legislation but some cyclists are bloody menaces.

I don't know what the answers is - obviously kids and country lane riders are rarely a problem but if you are a car driver then the lycra clad speedsters are an absolute dangerous menace on the roads and the majority take the "I'm more important, stuff you attitude"

Prudie, when driving down a road and i see a cyclist, I know for a fact that i am more dangerous to them than they are to me or anyone else.

The anger, is loony car driver over taking at poor times, and overtaking without leaving much room. The % that do outweigh the % of courteous drivers, so of course that gives them a grudge attitude.

As far as i'm aware they are more important than me, because they are more vulnerable.
