Perhaps we should put all our old folk in prison where they get 24/7 care...the prisoners can go into hospital...it would work wonders for re-offender rates.
Exactly 6 weeks ago today, at age 73, I was receiving exceptionally good service from the NHS for a completely unexpected abdominal aortic aneurysm. Apparently the survival rate is about 15%. I remember very little about the incident but the bit that does stick in my mind was being asked "Do you mind if we cut your shirt off?". Would anybody say "No"?
Totally. My Grandfather is 77, terminally ill and has a whole raft of very serious ailments all of which are being treated super aggressively on the NHS.
//But the great-grandmother was turned away from Basildon Hospital by doctors who said they could not perform the procedure because she was 'over 70,' //
Then, if this is true, somebody's head should fall.
Maybe they wanted her t have further tests to see if she was up an anaesthetic etc though danny, rather than just do it there and then and risk her? It might not be quite as it is being portrayed.
This lady was referred to the hospital by her GP last April but they could not do it as a 'routine' operation because she was over 70. Her age (94) meant that she would need extra care. It could never have been done in 'ten minutes'.
She was put on the waiting list but died in May. Her operation was scheduled for June 13th so it is not the case that she was refused surgery because of her age.
I was discharged from hospital because I kept leaving my bed (with help from my family) but I was told to drink as much fluids as I could so I went to the cafe or shop, not realising that they had NBM on the board behind me. I wasn't fed or given a drink for 5 days!!
It's not cash that is the problem but priority . Over 70s have a lower priority than Children for exanple ! The reasoning, right or wrong, is that over 70s have already lived a 'Full Life! so are less 'In Need'
OH is 82, he has been recommended for a cochlear ear implant. He has a two hour appointment end of May, he has had to fill a 4 page questionnaire about this. It looks like it is going ahead with no problem about his age.
