according to figures available last year, 26% of NHS doctors are foreign nationals, half of which are Asian, and two thirds of those are from the indian subcontinent. for the NHS it's a no-brainer to recruit in this manner; training is expensive and it makes sense to headhunt those who have had their training funded elsewhere. whether it's morally right for the UK to cream talented health staff from the third world would be worthy of its own thread.

mushroom...those figures are indeed surprising.
In medical TV documentaries in the 50's and 60's e.g Your life in their Hands, one rarely saw an Asian participant, but over the last 20 years, the role seems to be reversed in that the majority of Drs e.g Surgeons on the Edge, seem to be Asian.
I agree that an interesting thread would be as to the ethics of creaming Drs from the Asian countries.......but we do and continue to do so in ever increasing numbers to staff the NHS.

//from your statistics given, 8 out of 10 doctors in the NHS are white, only 2 out of 10 are Asian.//
depends what you mean by "Asian". the figures quoted are for doctors recruited directly from outside the UK. so Dr Ibrahami who graduated in Dhaka is counted, but Dr Shah who was born in Streatham and graduated at University College would not.
