He might have earned more sympathy if he actually had exposed "lies, deceit, corruption ...". Instead he published one 'smoking gun' then shot himself in the foot by publishing everything else he could get his hands on, thereby abandoning any claim to journalistic freedom or public interest.
As it is, he was on bail but chose to do a runner. Rather than face his accusers in Sweden, he has given the US time to prepare a case for extradition there. At the time of his recent arrest only the US were asking us to hand him over.
At least he is now in a place where smearing the walls is quite common, and he might find out what sexual assault feels like from the other side.
