Interesting to read this BBC footnote on terminology:

/// A note on terminology: The BBC uses the term migrant to refer to all people on the move who have yet to complete the legal process of claiming asylum. This group includes people fleeing war-torn countries, who are likely to be granted refugee status, as well as people who are seeking jobs and better lives, who governments are likely to rule are economic migrants. ///

Surely in this case there is legal process of claiming asylum, they are illegal entrants into our country.
On second thoughts however, they are not since it was our rescue boats that brought them into this country, and they themselves didn't enter it illegally.

If people are fleeing worn torn countries etc, then fair enough but are they not legally expected to apply for asylum in the first safe country they come to, and they pass through many of those so as to get to this land of milk and honey.

Jesus. H. Christ.
* The article says a record number of boats, not a record number of migrants.

* The record is for a day.

* The record is apparently 8 boats. While it is 8 too many, it is hardly an armada.

* The each of theboats contained less than 10 persons.

74 migrants crossing in one day seems a record to me, have you any proof of more?
Why did we bother to liberate France? They send an invasion in thanks.
I am sure Mr Macro has his best brains in the Surete working 24/7 to find the people smugglers in his country.
I understand they landed at Winchelsea Caravan Park where they were given a pint of electric John Smiths and asked if they wanted to enter the raffle before the turn came on.
Perhaps they can see they will end up in the EU if they stay in France and are terrified at the thought.
Never mind , after Brexit if it ever happens, all these Illegal Migrants / Asylum Seekers will Stop , only five more months to go. PMSL.
Aaah. So they’re brexiteers. All makes sense now.
//74 migrants crossing in one day seems a record to me, have you any proof of more?//
it's not something they tend to advertise
ZM, wouldn’t they have been more likely to have been offered shepherd neame “spitfire” in winchelsea?

“downed all over Kent - just like the Luftwaffe”
I’m not sure Winchelsea Caravan Park serves any handpull. Bottled maybe.
//74 migrants crossing in one day//

Which, of course is only the number we know about. Estimates of the factor between those who succeed undetected vary from between zero and any number you care to think of. I'm inclined to think it may be greater than zero.

I thought we were assured last year that the UK and France had reached an "accord" which stated that those intercepted would be returned to France. I read yesterday that 30 had been returned in 2019. I don't think that really meets the accord ut then why should any of us believe anything that politicians tell us.
AOG
In 2017 34,000 people claimed asylum. That works out at 95 EVERY DAY.
Last year there was a 23% decrease.

But don’t let the facts get in the way of your hysteria.
There were 6000 less asylum claims last year as a result of better prevention of illegals coming in lorries by ferry and tunnel.
As that route is made more difficult, more are resorting to the far riskier method of attempting to get here by small boat. The rise in boat crossings is a direct result of our success in reducing stowaways in lorries.
I doubt very much whether Winchelsea Caravan Park sells Shepherd Neame Spitfire (or anything else) on a hand pump. Very few holiday parks dispense real ale. The main reason (they will say) is that they do not have a cellar and so cannot keep it at the optimum temperature, especially as they only open in the summer. The real main reason is that they have no need to go to the extra expense involved in keeping it as their clientele do not demand it. This is probably quite true.

To be fair to Winchelsea Caravan Park, they are doing their best to keep the numbers of migrants down. I expect they sell “John Smith’s” or some other liquid they term “ale” which will be dispensed under CO2 pressure (to give it an inch and a half of foamy head). Migrants can quaff this whilst waiting for the link-up bingo to start. After that they can enjoy the Karaoke or the site’s own version of “Britain’s Got Talent”. If all that doesn’t send them scurrying for their rubber boats to head off back across the Channel, nothing will and they really must be desperate. :-)
^ where can i book?
Records will continue to be broken until it dawns on officials that helping them across doesn't dissuade anyone, it encourages them; and the blatantly obvious common sense action of returning them to the other side of the Channel is the only rational response.
Indeed, NJ. Bingo, electric beer and Karaoke. What a welcome.

This thread is regarding those who have crossed the channel in flimsy boats, and not those seeking asylum at the request of the EU.

// not those seeking asylum at the request of the EU. //

The 34,000 claims were made by people who got to the UK illegally. The EU cannot request asylum for anyone.
