As for my spirit....mine is in fine form but would I have any spirit left if I had to experience what the parents of a young student went through at the hands of Sutcliffe?
Hitting a lass with a hammer....dragging her, crying, by her ankles... stabbing her with a screwdriver then covering her up with rubbish. That is torture and I could punish him.
Some may say I am lowering myself to his level and therefore implying that they are above that. That doesn’t impress me one bit.

//do you think Shariah law is better than our legal system in this case?
Sutcliffe would be handed over to the families of his victims for justice. Blunt penknives, anyone?//
My understanding is that the bereaved family has the choice (under the sharia) to accept a sentence determined by the court, or negotiate a monetary compensation for their loss with tjhe murderer, Venator.
I'm not sufficiently educated in the sharia to know if that understanding is correct, but the idea of blood money has a long tradition. Isn't there the concept in Judaism of the "goel", - the nearest blood-relative?
In some societies it's an effective way of breaking the chain of revenge killing.

Gness, at 2310, Monday: "Some may say I am lowering myself to his level and therefore implying that they are above that. That doesn’t impress me one bit". Well said! There are far too many people pompously pontificating that revenge is an out-dated repugnant and no longer a socially acceptable emotional response to a situation which is the subject of this post.

No pompous pontificating here (and no levels come to that). I really don’t care what happens to him – a lynch mob could deal with him for all I care - but I think feelings of hatred and revenge and spite gnaw away at the spirit and, since that is destructive on a personal level, I won’t allow him or anyone else to make me into something I don’t want to be. I would rather he and people like him were dealt with as we deal with dangerous dogs. We put them down. No sympathy from me.

Naomi....I know you won’t believe me but I don’t have any of those feelings gnawing away at me. Certainly not spite......acting out of spite is horrid.
I’m sure you understand why I contributed to this thread. I posted what I would like to happen to Sutcliffe. That doesn’t mean that I spend my life filled with feelings you think will be gnawing away at my spirit......my spirit is just fine.
When I think of my friends I do have feelings of sadness......that B lost not only her daughter but her future family....a partner and grandchildren.....but it’s sadness, Naomi......not the feelings you wrongly attribute to me....... over to you..... ;-)

sanmac - // I'm not seeing anywhere in the responses any comments indicating "joyous reception", "rejoicing", or "to be gleeful"...Anyway, no sobs from me. //
At the time of posting, I was one hundred percent certain that the joyous reception and rejoicing would be following my post, and of course, I was not disappointed.

I am sure - but do correct me if not - that your notion of someone 'pompously pontificating … ' is aimed squarely in my direction.
As far as your observation that 'I' - if indeed my assumption is correct - you should be aware that I made no mention of // … revenge is an out-dated repugnant and no longer a socially acceptable emotional response to a situation which is the subject of this post. //
My observation was concerning my personal feelings only - I don't claim to speak for others.

sanmac - // Perhaps upon his death a Requiem Mass could be held, and in order not to disappoint AH, Beethoven's "Ode To Joy" could be performed. //
You seem determined to belittle my position, even though you clearly do not understand it, and fail to read my posts correctly in your haste to be unpleasant about me and what I say.
So, to be clear, I will not shed a single tear or waste a moment's sympathy when Peter Sutcliffe does die, he is a horrible creature who has not deserved length of life he has enjoyed.
However, and this is the only point I made - I cannot take any pleasure in his death, because to my mind, taking pleasure in the death of someone else is in danger of making me feel the same way he does, that a loss of life is something to be enjoyed and celebrated.
I don't believe that it is - and I apply that notion to any life, because I am unable to be selective about it.
It's purely the way I feel about the subject, you and others feel profoundly different, and amen to that, we are all entitled to our views.
The difference between you and I is that I accept you and your different view without comment - you feel the need to constantly insult and belittle me and mine.
