Probably because the market was flooded with fake £50s some years back and people did not trust them.
I would sooner have 5x£10s than one £50. Same with Euros.
Shopkeepers etc always seem to give you a pained expression like they have a mackerel stuffed up their arris when I have ever tendered them for payment.

naomi - // Shame he was treated so badly when he was alive. //
This was debated at length and I may be re-opening that debate but my view is -
Turing was not 'badly treated', he was prosecuted under the law as it stood at the time.
With the benefit of hindsight and changed attitudes, we are aware that the accusation, and the law he broke was draconian, and he should not have been prosecuted.
But you can't re-write history - Turing was a convicted criminal and the law and society does not, and should not, especially with hindsight which solves everything, provide credit in the crime bank for doing good work and saving lives.
If it did, Jimmy Savile would be being beatified as I type.
