PP I suspect that the crew had instructions not to do anything that might escalate the situation. Ships crews aren't fighters....they are just people like you'd find in the local garage, plumbers, leccy business.

I too sailed through the the Gulf a few times on Esso tankers. Was there when the battle of Mirbat was on.
Yes my sincere prayers are for the safe return of the crews.
