I still think many here just don’t get the basic geography!
Mainland Europe to Dublin on a ship like the new Celine, 600 trucks driving straight up to Belfast, onto one of the ferries to Scotland or England, et voila, you’re in the UK and not a customs stop.
Easy. And no wonder people too are coming in that way.
Back stop? Having a laugh, more like.
(Me? I’m against all borders, so I’m laughing too).

//You can’t “build” a border.//
No , but at the same time that we tell the frogs(I wouldn't even tell em) that we are not exporting through their God forsaken Country any longer, we tell the Irish that they are not exporting through ours. Go through France if you are so enamoured with the frogs Varadkar. That will work out well for all concerned I'm sure. :))

But it'd be irresponsible to allow citizens of non-EU countries to just wander through. Allowing folk to just wander through seems to becoming an issue in many places in the world at present. There should be cursory checks all the way. At the very least, by the transport companies. Ultimately though, it relies on spotting those who are where they ought not be.
‘What his EU masters will insist on is anybody's guess‘
I’m amazed how your tune changes to the given situation. Talking about England and they’re this big despotic behemoth. Talking about Ireland and you’re not sure what they’ll do.
Nice to see you admit they do have a say tho. How you can be so sure that no border will be imposed when the EU (you know, those dictatorial megalomaniacs in Brussels you keep reminding us about, ad nauseam)still have a say in the matter baffles me.

I enjoy a bit of Schadenfreude (hey, good European credentials, guys?), but at the same time am a little ashamed of it. Mainly directed at Varadkar who's obviously enjoyed his place in the sun patronised by Tusk etc and encouraged to cock a snoop at his most important trading partner while big brother is there to protect him. (Interesting, by the way, that a "republic" has a "queen" as head of state.)
Personally I bear the Irish people no animus and wish them and their fortunes no harm (nor for that matter the French or the Germans), but it is clear that a No-Deal Brexit, predicted by all the "experts" to plunge the UK into recession, will take the Republic down with it.

They only have a "say" if they have the nerve to tell the EU where to go. Which remains to be seen. They may not be willing to feel the Commission's wrath. Who knows, it may result in a forced undesired Irexit ;-)
(Never mind, it'll leave an opportunity for the SNP's Scotland to find an elite to pass control to.)

They rule by stealth not military might, Zacs. That is demonstrated by their behaviour over Brexit ("you're in and we can make it very difficult for you if you want to get out"). Their treatment of Greece and Italy shows similar determination to whip dissidents into line. In those cases they have the added leverage of those countries using the disastrous single currency.
ZM: "Ah, I see Tora is now portraying the EU as a soft touch." - not at all, far from it, just pointing out that they have no actual way to force anything beyond administrative punishments and fines. As judge says they rule by stealth powered by their devotees across the bloc, can you see yourself in there?
