Because that nonsensical notion assumes that 'good guys with guns' will be able to calmly shoot a criminal without hurting any innocent bystanders.
That works really well if you watch Hollywood films, like the President probably does - but here in the real world, it simply doesn't work like that.
People are stunned into inaction by the sheer shock of what is happening in front of them.

Well here are examples of eleven good 'guys' and elderly grandmothers who showed the moral courage to act in their defence and that of others

There have been loads of studies in the USA regarding good guys in the U.S. defending themselves and others with legitimate possessed firearms. The death rate of perpetrators with criminal intent is very small.
Even the lauded ,wonderful Obama commissioned a survey on defensive use by good guys against attackers and intruders.
The instances where the bad guys were wounded or decamped in the knowledge that their victims were armed is astounding. It is apparent according to many institutions who made these studies (Not NRA) that many innocent lives have been saved over the years by the good guys with guns. A fairly long article but amazing to read.

Ditto. I would request a permit even if I was dumb enough to visit the country for a short time. Something I never intend to do now.
An old ex-pat pal of mine who has worked for many years in the states and resides in California keeps firearms and has actually used one to scare off intruders who tried to burglarise his large workshop/garage where he restores E-Type Jags.

//How many incidents are there of armed civilians preventing incidents or preventing further injuries or deaths compared to the thousands murdered or injured over the past decade alone?//
If you bother to read the link at 2326 you will read that this is one of a few estimates over different years
//Applied to the U.S. population using standard scientific methods, this amounts to at least 162,000 saved lives per year, excluding all “military service, police work, or work as a security guard.”//
