Breathtaking arrogance in the light of the wrong-doing of the wife of a US spy.

This is the kind of behaviour I would expect from some of the less developed countries in the world, not the land of the free and, apparently, the home of the gutless.

You just can’t trust the USA anymore
i liked trump first off hes got b***s but just lately and specially after his comment on that gutless woman driver i really have changed my mind about him,
I think we just have to regard the current administration in the US as an aberration.
Would a different one react differently? I guess we don’t know, but you’d hope and expect so.
If they won’t compromise in a matter of that gravity, don’t hold your breath for them to do so in a trade deal come the Brave New World
works both ways, we still have Assange.
I don’t see why you should be surprised about Trump.
“America first” :-)
All very well when he irritates the people you don’t like, but he’s just as likely to turn on you eventually.
In an ideal world she would return, but given she is covered by DI, to force her back would seem like a betrayal, to the US public, of a US citizen by Trump. Seems to me there ought to be a drains up on when DI should apply and when not.
Adfa //You just can’t trust the USA anymore // You never could. Right from the days of nuclear cooperation after WWII, the TSR-2 and Concorde fiascos. Anybody who thinks we'll get a good trade deal from Trump is very naive.
"drains up"?
Isn't Assange in jail currently 3T?
yes but when he's done his sentence the septics want him.
bhg481 Certainly agree with you on the trade deal
Would most US citizens see it as a “betrayal”?
Very unlikely.
There does seem to be some support in the US media for waiving the diplomatic immunity in this case.
Very little the British Government can do. She was driving on the wrong side of the road (the US driving side). The incident was an accident, but she was probably guilty of Causing death by dangerous driving. In theory there could be a 10 year jail sentence, but more likely a suspended jail sentence, fine and disqualification.
To flee was cowardly and shows no remorse.
The US Government will hide behind the Diplomatic Immunity plea. And sadly there is nothing we can do.
That was a briefing note so presumably not a decision taken by Mr Trump personally. Perhaps in the diplomatic row over this, a different decision will be taken. I hope so.
We could send in the SAS to fetch her back
She should be brought back to face the consequences, no question about it ..
gromit: "And sadly there is nothing we can do. " - well we can hang on to the people they want, eg Assange etc.
i guess she has no remorse, a decent person would own up and face the music.. she has to live with what she has done, but like some americans, she may do the interview rounds on tv shows, and say god bless america.
It isn't the fact that she accidentally killed someone, its the way she dealt with it, telling the police she would remain in Britain, and then rabbitting at the first available opportunity. No honesty, no sense of shame and no class.

Why on earth it comes as a surprise that the US government have thrown a protective cloak over her is a mystery, this lot have long put their own people before general decency.

Trump talks about stopping criminals coming in, but is quick to protect his own bad guys (and gals).
