There's more than a 'hoarding disorder' going on here. This man clearly has other, more severe, mental health issues. No-one with an ounce of sanity could live in conditions such as those in the photographs. Surely?

I entirely agree with Ken. A lot of people are hoarders i.e keeping things we don't really need but for one reason or another we don't want to get rid of, but this is something else. This is keeping stuff that actually is rubbish and should be in the bin, not in the living room. Letting the rooms become unusable by not doing any cleaning and not being able to move around the home easily. For him to let his wife get like this is shocking and if he cared for her at all, he should have got the help he needed.I'm not really convinced that jailing him for 8 yrs is a suitable punishment.

Keeping things you want is not necessarily being a hoarder. Hoarding disorder is on a different scale altogether.

It's very sad indeed. Hoarding is very definitely a mental health condition and I also don't think jailing him would do anyone any good.

Have not seen any programmes on the condition? People living with so much rubbish they can barely get in the front door.

He was jailed for 8 years for manslaughter.Wholly appropriate in my opinion.

I agree with you ummmm. What would be gained from sending him to prison.? There are hoarders then there is this type of hoarder which caused neglect and the eventual death of his wife. He must have some sort of mental disorder, perhaps the only name for it is 'Hoarder disorder ' but I would call it hoarder mental disorder, or similar.

I was doing so because a divorced man in our village who lives in a nice house has recently got a new partner who is filling the garden with junk.
Gardening mags sometimes show a 'feature' in a garden; an old wooden wheel barrow or an old Belfast sink etc. with flowers growing in it. She started with a bicycle on the lawn with flowers in the basket which seemed (on its own) fun, but over the Summer it has grown to epic proportions - & is now a junk yard of an old petrol pump, countless pots & pans, a wardrobe sans door and every day brings more c ra p.
I think she has a severe psychological problem & really needs help, that's why I was looking for what it might be termed as, it's called OCD, Compulsive hoarding syndrome

It would be far too long-winded for me to explain danny, but in my post at 10.30 am I said 'what would be gained from sending him to prison?' He's not likely to let it happen again. He needs help, and I'm not convinced he will get it in prison. I appreciate that in your eyes a crime has been committed and he should be punished, but sometimes things are not that straight forward.

Easy to become trapped, especially if you are unwell and unable to perform simple domestic chores. Rubbish just builds up until you are overwhelmed and don't know where to begin. My solution was to employ a cleaner. The money I pay her is well worth it for the peace of mind it gives me, knowing that my home is not something of which to be ashamed.

Khandro OCD stands for obsessive-compulsive disorder, I don't think it's the same thing.
