Manifesto promises written in blood are promptly dropped or at very best watered down once power has been achieved.
That power is via the 'will of the people' but counts for naught as it is all generally forgotten in the years leading up to the next election, eclipsed by the lies, adventures and follies of their term in government.

The 'will of the people' plus 70p will get you a copy of The Daily Mail, nothing more.

"No Deal" will not, and should never be, an explicit option. It should only come about if all else fails, and not be a decided goal. So in that sense any referendum should be between two positive courses of action: remaining, or leaving with an agreed deal.

Parliament has very sensibly voted to make sure we don’t leave the EU until the withdrawal bill has been passed.
If Johnson had any sort of trick up his sleeve that might have seen us leaving by default (I’m not saying I think he did) hopefully he’s been foiled.

But this is not about manifesto promises.

The is about a referendum with one question and one question only. It was voted on, and the vote was the leave the EU, and that is what must happen.

No, it is not clear that all else has failed. Today's government defeat is, at least to an extent, about scheduling. Letwin, whose amendment this is, has indicated that he will vote for the deal, but refused to do so if there were still the possibility of a No Deal exit on the 31st.

It was always an issue that despite a confirmatory vote, the legislation might need to extend past Oct 31.
Quite possibly it won’t take that long.
Apart from that, it’s good that Parliament gets more time to scrutinise this.

There is always the possibility of a No Deal exit on the 31st. as it isn't exclusively in our hands but in the hands of our EU Lords & masters. It's Boris' draft agreement, no deal, or more wasted time in Limbo.

Parliament has had years to realise how far the EU are likely to shift. There's little need for more scrutinisation. Either grit the teeth and agree it, or reject it because no deal is preferable. Further delay doesn't help. Hasn't at any point so far. Could be decided now if the will was there.
